Posted: 06 Sep 2011 06:47 AM PDT THE Malaysia Ice Hockey Federation (MIHF) will be evaluating their junior athletes during the Malaysia International Ice Hockey Tournament starting at Sunway Pyramid Ice tomorrow. As part of its junior development programme, MIHF will have a team each in the Under-10 and Under-13 categories in the four-day championships. MIHF secretary Susan Loh said the Under-10 team had 10 players while the Under-13 team had 12. "All the players have been training for the past two years and have taken part in the local league. This tournament will give them the chance to gauge their progress against their counterparts from Hong Kong and Singapore. "Both Hong Kong and Singapore also have interesting junior programmes. They also share the MIHF's vision in the grooming of young ice hockey players,'' said Susan. The junior programme is handled by national captain Gary Tan, who had featured for Malaysia in the 2007 and 2011 Asian Winter Games. Gary said the players were looking forward to the championships. "It is an opportunity for us, the coaches, to evaluate them. Of course we are not setting any targets for them. We want them to play their normal game. The experience will certainly help them,'' said Gary. The tournament's main events are the International and Asian categories. The International category has six teams — Singapore Manimals, Kuala Lumpur Cobras 1, Singapore Blizzard Bears, Hong Kong Tigers, Kuala Lumpur Cobras 2 and Singapore Rusty Blades. The Asian category has Kuala Lumpur Dexion Wildcats, Singapore Blizzard Bears, Kuala Lumpur Ratpacks, Hong Kong Hitmen, Bangkok IHAT and Kuala Lumpur Renault Warriors. The sponsors are Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Pyramid Ice, Dexion, Perskindol, Mesuma, Revive, Jungle Magic, Renault and Mountain Dew. The tournament's general manager Noor Hisham Yahaya said the tournament would be an exciting affair. "Some of the teams have national players in their side. Kuala Lumpur Dexion Wildcats are the defending champions in the Asian category. They will have to be in their best to overcome their rivals,'' said Noor Hisham. |
Selangor introduces scheme to reward high achievers Posted: 06 Sep 2011 06:47 AM PDT THE Selangor Sports Council (MSNS) has introduced an incentive scheme for their athletes representing Malaysia in international competitions. MSNS executive director Norzamri Ishak said the cash incentive was for Selangor sportsmen and sportswomen. "We have identified the Olympic, Asian and Commonwealth Games and the World Championships as the events for the scheme,'' said Norzamri. The scheme will be launched on Friday. Selangor athletes, who had either won medals or represented Malaysia in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China and the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, have been invited to the launch as well as presentation at the i-City in Shah Alam. An individual gold medal in the Asian or Commonwealth Games is worth RM10,000; a silver RM7,000 and bronze RM5,000. For team events with five and less members, the incentive is RM6,000 for a gold medal while it is RM4,000 and RM2,000 for silver and bronze respectively. Under the scheme, a member of a team with six and more players will receive RM3,000 for a gold medal, RM2,000 for a silver and RM1,000 for a bronze. Norzamri said they would be rewarding RM800 each to Selangor sportsmen and sportswomen who had represented Malaysia in the 2010 Asian and Commonwealth Games. "They may not have won medals but making it to the Malaysian team is an achievement. The MSNS wants to show their appreciation to the athletes' sacrifice and dedication,'' said Norzamri. The incentive scheme, he added, would inspire Selangor athletes to qualify for this year's SEA Games in Indonesia and next year's Olympics in London. "We would like to see our athletes excel in international competitions,'' said Norzamri. |
