Vlasic to compete at worlds despite leg injury Posted: 19 Aug 2011 05:56 PM PDT ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — World high jump champion Blanka Vlasic will compete at the upcoming world championships despite a leg injury. The Croatian, who has dominated the women's high jump since earning the silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has a partially torn muscle in her left leg. "There are several reasons why I shouldn't go to the worlds," Vlasic said Friday. "But there is only one why I should: I simply could not stand watch my rivals compete without me. "I would feel as if someone had a party, but did not invite me," Vlasic said with tears in her eyes. The worlds start Aug. 27 in Daegu, South Korea. The women's high jump is scheduled for Sept. 3. Vlasic won the world title in both 2007 and '09. She won indoor world titles in 2008 and '10. Full Feed Generated by Get Full RSS, sponsored by Used Car Search. |
Georgetown, Bayi attempt to make-up after brawl Posted: 19 Aug 2011 05:54 PM PDT BEIJING (AP) — The Chinese team that got into a nasty brawl with Georgetown University players in an exhibition game went to the Beijing airport Friday to reconcile and see off their departing rivals ahead of a rematch Sunday in Shanghai. A brief statement from Georgetown said head coach John Thompson III and two of the team's players met with representatives of China's Bayi Rockets following "heated exchanges" in Thursday night's exhibition game. Chinese Vice Foreign Minsiter Cui Tiankai said Bayi members went to Beijing airport to see off the Georgetown team and the sides exchanged souvenirs. "My understanding is that it's all cleared up," Cui told reporters at a briefing on Vice President Joe Biden's ongoing visit to China. "We're pleased about this outcome." The two teams play each other again on Sunday in Shanghai. Chinese basketball fans slammed Bayi, which is owned by China's military, for its part in the brawl that forced the cancelation of a match intended to promote U.S.-China goodwill during Biden's visit. Video footage showing players punching each other and throwing chairs spread swiftly on the Internet and worldwide TV news. "The Bayi team have really lost face now," wrote a user named anoia on China's popular microblog Sina Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter. "No matter who is right and who is wrong, you have fought the visiting team as the host ... especially while their second man in charge is in this country." It was the latest instance of on-court fighting by China, whose players have been fined tens of thousands of dollars by the world and Asian federations for scrapping with opponents. In October, China's national basketball coach, a manager and three players were suspended for an ugly brawl with Brazil's team that left one Chinese player in a neck brace. Fights are also not uncommon at Chinese football matches. The video clip appears to show American players falling over Chinese players as they all run for the ball, and then two members from each side slamming into each other. Seconds later, the brawl breaks out. Chinese fans weren't impressed. "Does the Bayi team think they are better at Chinese kungfu than basketball and that is why they are desperate to show it off," said a Sina Weibo user named JF1113. "I just don't get it that China is fighting other people all the time. And they lose the games too," said another user named QimaDdou. Another, nego_lu, called players in China "poorly educated." The Georgetown Hoyas are in China on a 10-day goodwill trip that has been cited by the U.S. State Department as an example of sports diplomacy that strengthens ties between the two countries' peoples. Su Qun, a well-known basketball commentator in China, said blame shouldn't be aimed solely at the players. "It's not correct for players to fight. But we see fighting occasionally and it is often because of management problems in sports teams," he said. "It's important that teams have strict rules on discipline." Several NBA players have been considering China as a destination in the event the U.S. season was canceled due to a labor dispute. However, the Chinese Basketball Association poured cold water on those ambitions Friday, saying it would not accept contracted NBA players, and would require any free agents coming to the Chinese league to play for the full season. Bangladesh beats Zimbabwe by 6 wickets in 4th ODI Posted: 19 Aug 2011 05:52 PM PDT BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe (AP) — Tamim Iqbal hit 61 and Rubel Hossain took 4-31 Friday as Bangladesh salvaged some pride from its disappointing tour of Zimbabwe with a six-wicket win in the fourth one-day international. Zimbabwe still has an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. The last ODI is on Sunday. Hossain's second four-wicket haul in the series earned him the man-of-the-match award at Queens Sports Club. He bowled with bowled with impressive control on a pitch suited for batting, removing Brendan Taylor (106), Elton Chigumbura (31), Malcolm Waller (12), and Ray Price (0). Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was delighted with his team's performance. "The bowlers bowled well," Al Hasan said. "The wicket helped us with the spinners and kept them at a reasonable total. "We felt we were not positive enough batting (in previous matches). We needed the top order to play some good shots. That's what they did today." In pursuit, Iqbal and Imrul Kayes (28) ensured Bangladesh made a flyer, putting on 46 runs before Kayes was well caught by Hamilton Masakadza off pace bowler Chris Mpofu. Price trapped Iqbal in front to end a commanding innings, Kyle Jarvis took a superb catch in the deep off Prosper Utseya to remove Junaid Siddique (14) before dismissing Mushfiqur Rahim on 16. Captain Shakib Al Hasan (39 not out) and Shuvagato Hom (35 not out) took advantage of Zimbabwe's stray bowling to guide the Asian side home. Earlier, Taylor's third ODI hundred featured seven boundaries and a six and rescued the Zimbabwe innings from 89-4 in the 22nd over. Taylor shared a stabilising fifth-wicket stand of 94 runs with Chigumbura to briefly give Zimbabwe hope of a defendable total. Zimbabwe, however, collapsed following the departure of Chigumbura, who was caught in the deep by Nasir Hossain off Rubel Hossain trying to take the attack to the bowlers. Taylor was out when he mis-hit Rubel Hossain to be caught by Mahmudullah at mid off. "It was a good wicket to bat on," Taylor said. "We kept losing wickets at crucial stages. It kept us on the backfoot. "We expected Bangladesh to come back strongly today. We were not good enough today. Winning 3-2 does not come out as good as 4-1. We need to look at ourselves in the mirror and come back with a better performance on Sunday."
