PEKAN: Mosque and surau committees here have been told to clean up their act.

Pekan Umno deputy chairman Datuk Ishak Mohamad said several imams and committees would only use mosques for worship while neglecting other aspects such as cleanliness.

Cleanliness is the foundation of faith. Mosques and surau are our places of faith, thus we must always make sure it is well maintained and in excellent condition, he said before representing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak in handing out donations to 56 mosques and 166 surau in Pekan.

Each mosque received RM1,000 while RM600 were given to every surau.

Ishak, who is also the Bebar state assemblyman, said the allocation would be meaningless if it was not utilised properly for the benefit of all worshippers.

A mosque is also a community centre. I hope the mosque committee chairmen will be more proactive and use the money to organise more social and unity activities, he said.

ALOR GAJAH: Motorists heading to Malacca City via Alor Gajah received surprise when they were stopped and given a packet of bubur lambuk, recently.

Some 1,000 packets were distributed during joint event by Alor Gajah Municipal Council (MPAG) and A'Famosa Resort in conjunction of Hari Raya festive.

MPAG president, Kamarudin Md Shah said the programme was organised to foster closer relationship between his staff and members of the public.

He said three cauldrons and 30kg of rice were used to prepare the porridge under the joint programme with the resort. It took three hours to complete the task.

"We started distributing the packets from 4pm and 30 personnel from both MPAG and resort were involved in the task," he said.

Motorist Mohd Amin Sulaiman, 40, said he was delighted to receive the packet from the MPAG president himself.

"I was on the way back from Kuala Lumpur and stopped to buy some food to break fast when Kamarudin approached me and handed the porridge.

KULAI: In order to ensure the safety of homes during the festive season, the public are urged to take proper security measures and cooperate with the police.

State police chief DCP Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Shariff said that other than ensuring all the doors and windows were locked, those going out of town for Hari Raya could head to the nearest police station to register for the safe home campaign.

He said that police officers would patrol the registered houses as well as neighbouring areas so that residents could enjoy their holiday with peace of mind.

"We are proud to say that since the launch of the campaign in 2006 we have achieved a positive feat because all the houses registered under the campaign had no break-ins during the period," he said during the launch of the safe home campaign.

However, DCP Mohd Mokhtar said the responsibility of ensuring the safety of the houses should not only rest on the police's shoulders but the public should also take the initiative to register under the campaign.

He added that the safe home campaign was until Sept 6, and those interested could register at the nearest police station or call the police hotline at 07-2212 999.

Other than that, he also said that a total of 442 police officers would be stationed at 45 hotspots in 13 districts under the Ops Sikap XXIV (24) in conjunction with Hari Raya.

"The objective of Ops Sikap, is to bring down the number of road accidents that usually occurs during the balik kampung rush," DCP Mohd Mokhtar said, adding that it was also to remind people to be ethical on the roads.

He added that in 2010, a total of 2,447 road accidents were recorded, including 37 fatal accidents which involved 42 deaths, 20 of which were motorcyclists, 18 drivers and passengers, three lorry drivers and one pedestrian.

DCP Mohd Mokhtar added that 18 people were heavily injured and 21 obtained minor injuries.

"A total of 17,682 summons were issued during that period under Ops Sikap," he said.
