Firemen need to be efficient in various aspects Posted: 23 Aug 2011 06:59 PM PDT JASIN: Firemen must be smart and agile apart from being physically fit in their line of duty as first responders. State Fire and Rescue Department director Zainuddin Md Alip said the department needed more modern firemen who are well-versed and efficient in various aspects. "Fitness among firemen is a must. "But they must also be capable to think, plan and know how to deploy proper strategies before every fire and rescue operation," he said at an impromptu drill along the Jasin-Bukit Senggeh road here on Saturday. He added progress have brought about changes in ways of protecting and securing the nation and its environment. "A fireman's responsibility is much more demanding and challenging than before with rising risks and threats in the society. "It is crucial for them not to take their work for granted but focus on doing things right," he said. The drill was conducted from midnight to 4.30am with participation of 50 personnel. It involved a lorry laden with chemical substance crashing into pedestrians before falling down a cliff. Three civilians were injured and subsequently two firemen who went on the search and rescue operation were also overcame due to over chemical inhalation. Five special firefighting vehicles including a hazardous material rig was deployed in the drill involving firemen from the Kubu, Ayer Keroh, Merlimau and Jasin stations. State Fire and Rescue Department deputy director (operations) R. Ezumalai said objective of the drill was kept a surprise so that the firemen's skills and knowledge could really be put to test. "All the proper equipment and tools are there and its up to the firemen on how best to utilise them to maximise their search and rescue effort. "We want them to take this drill seriously and make use of their knowledge and senses to perform," he said, adding even the dummies used as victims weighed some 80kg each. The midnight exercise, he added, was part of the plan as any sort of circumstances could occur in their line of duty. Zainuddin, who witnessed the exercise, said the drill was meant to test the personnel's skills, knowledge and stamina in times of emergencies without prior rehearsal. Asked about the outcome, he said there are still room for improvement especially in terms of logistic and lighting planning, communication and preparedness. "However, it is good to see how we performed and take note on how we can improve," he said, adding that the impromptu drills would be a monthly affair. "It is a common practice for us to hold indoor exercise at each station everyday. "Now it is time we frequent more outdoor drills like this to give better exposure to the firemen," he added. |

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 05:01 PM PDT KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu Road Transport Department would deploy 138 enforcement officers to patrol the state's three main killer stretches as part of the one-month Ops Raya operation. State RTD director Abdul Rahman Emang Anyie said the roads are: KM58 of the Jeranganu-Jabor road, KM61 of the Marang-Dungun road and KM54 of the Sungai Tong-Setiu road. "Our officers will focus on visible enforcement along these stretches. "We want to increase the perception of being caught to deter motorists from endangering themselves as well as others," he said. The RTD's enforcement officers, added Abdul Rahman, would be patrolling 24 hours throughout the operation conducted from Aug 14 until Sept 14. At the launch of Terengganu's Ops Raya, he said the state had recorded some 313 fatal accidents last year with most cases occurring at the killer stretches. "The three killer roads are also under repair, thus increasing the urgency for us to be there to ensure that motorists follow the traffic laws. "Those from out of town might not be familiar with the road changes and these drivers must be more alert and vigilant," he said. He added the department would still conduct undercover operations on express buses this holiday season. "We will still put our personnel on the buses to ensure errant drivers are brought to justice. "Our officers have also inspected some 128 express buses in various depots statewide." The RTD, he added, would also be organising a briefing on passengers' safety for express bus drivers here on Sunday. Abdul Rahman also urged the public with information on traffic offenders to call the state's RTD hotline at 09-6222023 or email at aduantrafik@jpj.gov.my |
