Hotel treats 70 children and single mothers to buka puasa fare

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 02:38 AM PDT

KUALA TERENGGANU: Some 70 children and single mothers from lower-income families were given an early Hari Raya cheer courtesy of Grand Continental Hotel here.

The children and their mothers were treated with Hari Raya goodies and hampers as well as the customary duit raya in conjunction with the holy month of Ramadan. The hotel's general manager Bobby Anboselvan said the hotel was working with the state Welfare department in locating lower-income families.

"We want to do our part in lessening their burden especially during Ramadan.

"Hari Raya Aidilfitri is two weeks away, so we want to spread the cheer a little earlier," he said adding that the hotel wanted to do their part in helping needy families.

He explained that the hotel's personnel also helped in making the children feel at home while savouring the hotel's buka puasa menu.

"It is a semi-formal event where we want the children to feel comfortable.

"More importantly, it should be fun while spreading the cheer," he said.

Anboselvan added that the hotel would always support any initiative by the Welfare department in helping lower-income families.

"A little kindness goes a long way in instilling happiness and smiles on the faces of the children and their mothers," he said.

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 02:32 AM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: One can learn a lot about Sabah by going to the Art Hunt Sabah 1Malaysia Contemporary Art Tourism 2011 exhibition here.

From portraying the state's colourful cultures and people to her impressive sights and captivating wildlife, the exhibition – themed Art Hunt Sabah – held at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport is just waiting to be discovered.

Visitors can browse through the handful of booths set up at the departure floor of the airport and marvel at how the local artists present and tell the stories of Sabah's finest, each in their own way.

Take for example Jamadih Latip, an artist with the Kumpulan Pelukis Kinabalu. He was bent on highlighting Sabah's icons like Mount Kinabalu, the Rafflesia flower and people from the various ethnic groups.

"I hope to make more people especially tourists know about Sabah when they bring my work back to their countries.

"On the other hand I wish to document the landscapes in Sabah and also preserve her custom and traditions through my paintings. Over time, people and landscapes will change. I wish to capture them as they are now," he said.

Jainal Amambing and Awang Fadilah, both native art enthusiasts, love to depict the many cultures in Sabah and the people of the state's ever-diverse community.

"We must know our responsibilities as artists … not only to present art but also to encourage tourism in Sabah through our paintings," Jainal said.

Both have received international recognition for their work, with Jainal winning the second prize in the Noma Concours for Picture Book Illustrations, organised by Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO in Tokyo, in 2000 and 2006.

Awang was also a runner-up in the competition, aimed at discovering up and coming illustrators, graphic designers and artists in Asia, the Pacific, Africa, Arab states, and Latin America and the Caribbean, in 2006.

Rosmaini Sunarjo, an artist with the Mayuri House Art Gallery, likes to paint the wildlife of Sabah, with stone paintings of various kind of animals a hit among visitors.

"I wish to introduce people the interesting wildlife we have in Sabah through the colourful stone paintings," he said.

Another attraction at the exhibition would be Huang Poh Lo, an Indian Chinese calligrapher.

A graduate in economics, the 61-year-old fell in love with calligraphy 16 years ago and has not looked back ever since.

"I use calligraphy to motivate people," he said, adding that even people from mainland China approved of his skills.

He has also developed his own form of Arabic calligraphy with his creation of the Shah Rumi-Jawi font. "It looks Arabic but actually they are normal alphabets," he said.

The ongoing Art Hunt Sabah, which will run to until Aug 28, is jointly organised by the Tourism Ministry and state Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry.

Aimed at showcasing the treasure chest of art and talents of local artists in Sabah, among others, the Art Hunt Sabah involves 10 satellite art venues in and around Kota Kinabalu, featuring contemporary artworks of local artists.
