MPK questions why delay in approving certification for its crane

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 07:14 AM PDT

KUANTAN: The Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) is upset with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) for the delay in providing certificate of fitness for its crane. The local authority is now waiting for almost a year.

Its president Datuk Zulkifli Yaacob said it was rather weird for the department to take such a longtime to certify the cranes.

"We need to know why it is taking a long time and we need to ascertain whether the crane can be used or not.

"It is also causing us problem as we have been receiving requests from the public to trim trees from time to time, especially trees that are posing dangers," he said here recently.

Zulkifli added that as a short-term measure, MPK has been renting the equipment because they need to carry out their work as usual.

Zulkifli also said MPK was taking measures to collect a sum of RM4.5mil from Alam Flora Sdn Bhd for failing to settle its payments after taking over the former's assets in 1997 following the privatisation of solid waste management.

"We have been nice all these while including making payments on schedule on the services carried out. We have no debts with them.

"However, we are now taking action by making deductions from the RM1.6mil monthly payment given out to them," he added.

Zulkifli said a schedule had been worked out to ensure that the amount due to MPK is paid before Sept 1, adding that deductions commenced from last month.

On complaints by residents involving trailers and lorries parked near their houses and public fields, posing risks to them, Zulkifli said the matter was now under the jurisdiction of Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).

"SPAD is still new and it has yet to open an office here.

"We are rather clueless on who to turn to pertaining to this problem," he added.

In a move to find fast solution to the matter, an ad hoc committee chaired by one of MPK councillors, Wan Salihin Wan Hassan, was set up to look into ways to pacify the residents, Zulkifli said.
