240 students team up to transform unused land into recreational area

Posted: 08 Aug 2011 07:32 PM PDT

JOHOR BARU: SMK Sultanah Engku Tun Aminah (SETA) pupils braved the heat and dirt in an effort to beautify their school.

About 240 students planted patches of grass, threw mud-balls into a stream and cleared the rubbish found an unused land behind their school.

The school's parent-teacher association chairman Nazri Awang Yaacob said they decided to put the unattended land to a good use after realising the parcle belonged to the school.

"The state Drainage and Irrigation Department, Johor Baru City Council, the Landscape Department and non-governmental organisations had agreed to help us to beautify the land," he added.

SETA senior assistant for student affairs, Woo Sow Pheng said the school hoped to transform the parcle into a recreational area, complete with stepping-stones, gazebos and benches for students to hold study groups and conduct their outdoor activities.

"We will also create a mini forest, tag the trees to enable the pupils to identify the species that are native to Malaysia," she said.

She said the creation of this outdoor recreational area would be a good way of creating awareness among the pupils on the preservation of forests and environment.

Form Four student Wan Nuramalina Wan Sulaiman, 16, who had recently undergone a river-ranger training programme, said she and her friends would used the skills they acquired at the camp to improve the water quality in the stream that run on the land.

"For example, we will test the water temperature, and if it is too cold, it means that it is unsuitable for aquatic life because of the lack of oxygen," she said adding that she was looking forward of a recreational space when they had cleared up the land.

Another student, Hanis Khaliesah, 13, said she was excited that the school planned to beautify the land.

"I think it will give student a nice and cooling area for outdoor activities such as camping in the future," she said.

Villagers to have better facilites

Posted: 08 Aug 2011 07:31 PM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: Three far-flung villages in Sabah's northern district in Kota Marudu would get better basic amenities and infrastructure as part of the government's effort to improve the lives of rural folks.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili, the three villages were Kg Gontoi, Kg Toritidon and Kg Pampang Poring

The settlements were only accessible by former logging roads.

Dr Ongkili, who is also Kota Marudu MP, said the villagers there would be getting assistance to improve their livelihoods.

He said the government had allocated RM200,000 for gravity water supply.

Besides this, he said, they would also get electricity from the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd.

He said the three villages have a total population of about 800 people.

"The project was part of the government's effort to provide basic infrastructure to rural communities and improve their standard of living in line with the goals of the National Key Result Areas."

There was also plan to upgrade the rural road under the NKRA, he said during a charity expedition carried out by the Labuan National Unity and Integration Department to Kg Gontoi recently.

Dr Ongkili said the Kota Marudu Land Utilisation Committee was also expediting land approvals for villagers in Kg Gantoi that had been gazetted as water catchments.

"The three villages have since been excluded from the water catchments zone although development has to be regulated to ensure environmental protection, therefore certain crops that may effect erosion and downstream pollution cannot be planted," he said.

"I urge villagers to develop their land with commercial crops and continue to work closely with the government for development. The government aims to bring development to all rural communities but it will take time."

Food, clothing, children's toys, books and medicine were also handed out to the villagers when the charity expedition stopped at the village. Hair washing and cutting service were given free to the villagers and their children.

Terengganu to revive hockey league

Posted: 08 Aug 2011 05:17 PM PDT

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu Men's Hockey Association will revive the state hockey league vying for the Menteri Besar Cup which was last held in 2008.

Its secretary, Sabri Salleh said the tournament, which would be held after Adilfitri, could restore the glory of hockey in the state, particularly in the districts.

He said the tournament was abandoned in 2008 as the association was facing financial constraints while the focus then was the Malaysia Games (Sukma), which was hosted by Terengganu.

"We hope the league will be a good platform to popularise the sport and uncover new talents in hockey to represent the state and country," he said.

Sabri said the association would also organise the state Veteran Hockey Championship (40 years and above) in November to select players to represent the state at the National Veteran Hockey Championship in Alor Setar in December.
