Awareness on disease crucial

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 04:18 AM PDT

JOHOR BARU: It is high time for Malaysia to have a body or a non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to raising awareness regarding Hepatitis B and C, just like the Malaysian AIDS Council.

Johor Specialist Hospital consultant gastroenterologist (digestive system specialist) Dr Abraham Mathew George said awareness about the disease among Malaysians was still low.

"Personally, I would put general awareness of the disease at only about 30% as many still do not realise the seriousness of Hepatitis B and C," he said after delivering a speech at a public forum in conjunction with the World Hepatitis Day.

According to him, about 1.5 million Malaysians have Hepatitis B or C, but many were not aware that they were affected because the symptoms were not obvious.

"The symptoms, which may include fatigue, nausea and jaundice among others, may not be immediately obvious, but if not treated could lead to liver cirrhosis or liver cancer," he said.

Dr Abraham added that while both viruses could be spread through blood transfusion, they could also be spread from a mother to an infant during childbirth, or exposure to contaminated blood from needles or razors.

"Currently vaccination is available for Hepatitis B only, but treatment can only control it whereas Hepatitis C can often be cured," he said, adding the best way for the public to ensure that they were safe from the two illnesses was to go for full medical checks regularly.

Meanwhile, clerk Chan Fong Wei, 45, said that she found the talk to be clear, easy to understand and informative.

She also revealed that she conducted a blood test during the forum, and would take the necessary action when she received the results, also encouraging her family members and friends to go for medical tests as well.

Another participant, engineer N Ganesh, 38, said that the forum was good because it helped to create more awareness about the diseases.

"I was diagnosed with Hepatitis C two years ago, and when I found out I became more careful to ensure that I wouldn't spread the disease to other members of my family," he said adding that he had been cured of the disease after undergoing treatment for it.

Mayor urges Ramadan traders to follow council's cleanliness guidelines

JOHOR BARU: A total of 1,430 trading lots in 42 locations have been identified by the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) for the Ramadan month.

Mayor Mohd Jaafar Awang said the lots could accommodate 1,227 traders in the locations which included Bukit Kempas, Permas Jaya, Kampung Majidee, Taman Dahlia and the biggest bazaar would be at Bandar Baru Uda.

He urged traders to adhere to hygiene and cleanliness guidelines set up by the council, especially to use proper utensils when handling food sold at the bazaars.

"All operators handling food should wear proper headgear or hair nets, aprons and must get Typhoid (Ty 2) vaccination and food served must be covered properly," he said during the recent full council meeting at the MBJB building here.

He added the council placed importance with regards to hygiene of operators to ensure that there was no food poisoning or contamination reported to the council during the fasting month.

On another matter, he also urged all pet owners not to let their pets roam free without supervision or a leash to prevent unnecessary accidents from occurring.

Mayor Mohd Jaafar Awang said that pet owners, especially those who reared dogs for safety purposes should be responsible and tactful in managing their pets' safety, having cognisance of the safety of members of the public.

"It is a concern especially after recent news of dog attacks which have created fear in people's minds," he said.

He added the council received 183 complaints about stray dogs from January to June this year, which was an increase compared to the 131 complaints received in 2010.

"We want to encourage dog owners not to leave their pets unattended or to allow them to be thought of as strays," he said.

He said the city council also saw a rise in complaints received about rubbish and waste within its jurisdiction.

"Between January and June this year, 411 complaints were lodged regarding poor rubbish management as well as cleanliness management," he said, adding that the number of complaints received this year was a huge increase compared to the 664 complaints received in 2010.

Mohd Jaafar said that despite the council's efforts to curb the accumulated rubbish in its areas, the number of complaints regarding the matter is increasing.

The amount of rubbish collected everyday was about 1,500 metric tonnes, he said.

"I would like to tell the public that although the council is playing its part in keeping the city clean, it is also everyone's responsibility to reduce domestic waste and maintain the cleanliness of the city," he said.

Mohd Jaafar also announced his retirement from his post on Aug 7 after serving the government for the past 33 years and six months.
