15-year-old grabs gold in China Posted: 11 Aug 2011 06:26 AM PDT IT was a memorable outing for P. Tarshyent in the Asian Karate Federation (AKF) championships in Quanzhou City, China recently. The 15-year-old Tarshyent, a member of the Suba Karate Academy in Kapar, Klang, won the gold medal in the juniors' 52kg category in the championships. The youngster certainly had reasons to be excited. It was his first overseas competition. Tarshyent, a Form Three student of Klang High School, said he was happy with his impressive outing in the championships. "The victory is motivating and I am looking forward to other international competitions. I have to thank my coaches (S. Prem and P. Arivalagan) for their guidance. I don't think I could have progressed without their guidance," said Tarshyent. Surprisingly Tarshyent's involvement in karate started about four years ago. He had read an article on Suba Karate Academy's training programme in Kapar. "I was impressed with the write-up and their programme. I contacted the instructor (Prem) who gave me the opportunity to join the training programme," said Tarshyent. Prem said he was surprised when Tarshyent called him. "The boy showed a lot of enthusiasm and wanted to take up karate as a sport. He was very disciplined and was quick to learn the basics in karate. We are pleased with his progress. There is a bright future for him in karate," said Prem. Besides Tarshyent, Prem said two other exponents from Suba Karate Academy had also won medals in Quangzhou. Schoolgirl P. Vishalini won the bronze in the girls' junior 47kg category while S. Loganesha Rao won a bronze in the men's senior 55kg section. Vishalini, a Form Two student at SMK (P) Kapar said the championships was her first competition overseas. "I won a bronze medal but the experience was valuable and I am keen to train more harder for other competitions. I also had the chance to learn a lot after watching the seniors from Asia in the competition," said Vishalini. Prem said Tashyent, being small in size, has to work on his leg work. "He has to build himself physically to overcome the shortcoming. We are also working on improving his skills," said Prem. Both Tarshyent and Vishalini train four times a week at the Suba Karate Academy. They also attend training at the National Sports Council (NSC) training centre. In the AKF championships, Malaysia won four gold, two silver and seven bronze medals. The other gold medalists were Leong Tze Wei (men's senior kata), Saravanan R. Wungindra (men's junior kumite – 61kg) and Mohd Hatta Mahmut (men's senior kumite (84kg). The silvers came from the trio of Sek Jia Wen, Lee Xin Yi and Khaw Yee Voon in the girls' team kata. The bronze medal winners were Vallenda Agustine (women's cadet – kata); Goh Chan Yit (men's junior – kata); Ravin Vijayakumar (men's senior kumite – 63kg); G. Yamini (women's senior kumite – 61kg) and Jamaliah Jamaluddin (women's senior kumite – 66kg). Full Feed Generated by Get Full RSS, sponsored by Used Car Search. |
