Football coaching clinic for youngters a success

Posted: 02 Aug 2011 06:40 AM PDT

FOOTBALL enthusiasts will never find this happening elsewhere — an English Premier League (EPL), J-League, La-Liga and a Serie-A finals, all played on the same ground within a span of an hour.

The finals were part of a football coaching/carnival by the Negri Sembilan Football Association (NSFA) to unearth new talents in the 7 to 18 age group and working with the best youth coaches in the area.

This was the second half-day coaching clinic being held at the Rahang Square grounds, the first was held in March and a third and final clinic will be held on Oct 30.

According to programme coordinator/ NSFA executive secretary Faizal Zainal, coaching clinics starting with the very young are probably the best way forward to identify new talents and help them prepare for their future in the game.

"The youth coaches know the game and know how to make it work at the youth level. They have an open mind and they are a good source of inspiration who can give the kids in the younger age group the best experience possible,'' added Faizal, a former state and national player.

About 215 budding players took part in the half-day coaching clinic where pre-registered participants were grouped together into teams according to their age group and given team names from the English, Italian, Spanish and Japanese leagues.

The teams then played in a competition with the top four teams in each league winning prizes.

The Under-18 boys played in the nine-a-side English Premier League banner under Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea and the Under-12 in a nine-a-side La Liga (Espanyol, Osasuna, Real Madrid, Sevilla FC, Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao, Valencia FC and Malaga FC). The Under-10's took part in a seven-a-side format with Serie A status (Parma, AS Roma, Lazio, Napoli, AC Milan, Sampdoria, Juventus and Internazionale) while the Under-8's played in a five-a-side event under the J-League banner (Urawa Reds, Yokohama, Marinos, Kashima Antlers, Cerezo Osaka, JEF United Chiba, Shimizu S. Pulse, FC Tokyo, Jubilo Iwata, Nagoya Grampus Eight and Vissel Kobe).

"Apart from the EPL where there were only four participating teams, the response to the other leagues was overwhelming. This was our target group to nurture youngsters who are keen to take up football as a career,'' said Faizal.

Faizal who also played for Selangor and Perak before retiring with Negeri Sembilan in 1996, said a lot of guys who have played a lot of football have no clue how much they don't know until they attend a coaching clinic.

During the weekend coaching clinic, the youths were put through an hour of stamina building and taught some football basics of good goalkeeping, defending and being an all-rounder on the field.

Most of the players in the respective teams had never played together and were total strangers to each other and the grouping was done by a special committee a week before the coaching clinic was held.
