King issues statement on Bersih 2.0 rally Posted: 03 Jul 2011 08:28 AM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin has made known his thoughts on the Bersih2.0's proposed rally, saying that street demonstrations will bring more bad than good to the country. He said he had been following closely the developments concerning the planned rallies and that he was confident the Prime Minister was capable of dealing with the current situation. The King's remarks were issued through a special statement by Istana Negara yesterday. Below is the translated full text of the King's statement: "I am following closely the developments of the proposed gathering and procession by Bersih with the aim of handing over a memorandum to me as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, and how the Government, particularly the agencies and departments concerned, is handling the issue. "However, I believe that the nation's leadership under Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is capable of handling this problem in the best possible way. "I urge that amid the political fervour of a section of the people to bolster democracy in our country, it must also be ensured that this demand on democracy does not bring destruction to the country. "Generally, we cannot be following too much the practices in other countries, as harmony and stability are vital foundations for a country and which all quarters must protect. "I also urge the Government to carry out everything that is entrusted to it by the people in a just and wise manner, and it is important that I, as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, do not want to see this country with a plural society in a situation where there is animosity among them or a section of the people being enemies with the Government, on whatever grounds. "When any problem arises, we as a civilised society must resolve it through consultations and not follow our emotions, as the Malay saying goes Yang dikejar tak dapat yang dikendong berciciran (Not getting what we chase for and spilling what we carry). "The fact is, street demonstrations bring more bad than good although the original intention is good. Instead, we should focus on our main objective to develop this country, and not create problems that will cause the country to lag behind. "Remember that there is no land where the rain does not fall, there is no ocean that is not turbulent. That is how important moderation and compromise is, which has been long in practice by our nation's administration." - Bernama Full Feed Generated by Get Full RSS, sponsored by USA Best Price. |
Penang CM and Ezam in verbal war Posted: 03 Jul 2011 06:35 AM PDT GEORGE TOWN: A verbal war has erupted between Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Senator Ezam Mohd Nor, who led a Friday march towards Komtar to protest against the Bersih 2.0 rally. Lim rapped State Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman for saying that the party was not involved in the protest. "The arrest of Senator Ezam Mohd Nor by the police for illegal assembly indicates that Umno is trying to deny its involvement in the demonstration," Lim said in a statement yesterday. On Friday, a group of protesters marched at the mid-span of Penang Bridge causing a 10km-long traffic jam. Ezam, in a tweet yesterday, criticised the Chief Minister of "hypocrisy" as Lim had been supportive of Bersih 2.0 rally but condemned Friday's protest march. He also challenged Lim to pull out of the Bersih 2.0 rally if he was sincerely against street protests. "As Lim had openly condemned the rally in Penang that brought traffic to a crawl, he should also condemn the Bersih rally planned in Kuala Lumpur next week." "Otherwise, it will only expose the hypocrisy of Pakatan Rakyat leaders who have a tendency to re-define rules at their whim and fancy to suit their political interest," he said. On Lim's part, he posted in his blog, calling on Umno to apologise to the public for their involvement in the rally. However, Penang Umno has refuted talk about its involvement in the protest. Penang Umno secretary Datuk Azhar Ibrahim said if Umno were to hold such an event, they could attract tens of thousands of protestors as they had 150,000 members in the state. "If Umno was involved, the crowd would have been much bigger," he said. Azhar also noted that Lim had staged numerous demonstrations in the past against the Malacca Chief Minister. "But Lim obviously could not take it when the people of Penang start criticising him," he said. Full Feed Generated by Get Full RSS, sponsored by USA Best Price. |
Home Minister: People realise agenda of illegal rally organiser Posted: 03 Jul 2011 04:36 AM PDT SHAH ALAM: Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said people have realised that the demands of the illegal rally organiser go beyond clean and fair elections. He said this is because the eight demands by the July 9 rally organiser could have been discussed with the Election Commission (EC). "Statements by party leaders following the arrest of people with certain ideology and activities by foreign non-governmental organisations made people realise the hidden agenda," he said Sunday after closing a seminar at Universiti Teknologi MARA . Asked about subversive elements wanting to topple the government, Hishammuddin said that he will monitor developments of the illegal rally. Hishammuddin said the highest priority of the government is the country's security, peace and public order. "The people can evaluate if there are elements to topple the government or other political considerations by the organiser of the July 9 illegal rally." He said monitoring of websites found that the slogans trumpeted have strayed from the eight demands made by the organiser. The people should not take things for granted as information received by the ministry found other agenda which the people will soon know. "If they know after things have happened, then it will be too late and meaningless," he said Related Stories: |
