Posted: 26 Jul 2011 01:08 AM PDT

JOHOR BARU: The public are urged to be wary of fake Effective Microorganism (EM) products currently being sold in the market here.

Johor Local Government, Housing, Arts, Culture and Heritage committee chairman Datuk Ahmad Zahri Jamil said fake EM products being sold in the open to the public were sold at a higher price of RM20 per litre to the public.

Effective Microorganism is chemical free and contains eco friendly microorganisms that breaks down harmful microorganisms and certain toxins.

It is an alternative to the use of chemicals in agriculture, environmental remediation and waste water treatment.

"These fake EM are not that effective at all and the smell is terrible compare to the original EM.

"I believe that nowadays many people have realise how good EM is and some quarters used such opportunities to introduce fake EM products to make a quick buck," he said.

Ahmad Zahri said this in a press conference after officiating the environmental program biotechnology of EM technology, which was jointly organised by the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) and Dynasty View Sdn Bhd here recently.

He reminded fake EM producers not to take advantage as the product was meant for the good of the environment.

In another matter, Ahmad Zahri applauded initiatives set by Dynasty View to promote the usage of EM to the public.

He pointed out that the state produced 1,500 metric tonnes of organic garbage a day at the Seelong sanitary landfill.

"If we could recycle these organic garbage and use them for EM, we would also help lessen the amount of garbage at the landfill," he said.

Ahmad Zahri praised developers such as Dynasty View and Tanah Sutera Development Sdn Bhd for promoting EM in their project.

He urged other developers to follow suit, as not only EM are good for the environment but also create a better and comfortable lifestyle.

Cut down old trees, residents urged

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 01:02 AM PDT

MUAR: Residents in the Bakri parliamentary area here have been urged to cut down all old and dying trees near their houses.

Bakri Barisan Nasional division chief Datuk Saipolbahari Suib said this was to avoid the trees from crashing onto their homes during heavy storms.

He said besides causing damage to homes, cars and other properties, the trees could also cause injuries or even kill people.

"We would not want this to happen to anyone in Bakri and we advise the residents to clear off any old and dying trees near their houses.

"The Government can provide aid to repair damaged homes, but they cannot bring dead people alive again," he said before presenting cash aid to 35 residents on Thursday.

Saipolbahari, who was accompanied by special officer to Mentri Besar for Bentayan Chris Lee and Bakri MIC chief M. Aridas, said the cash aid was from the Welfare Department.

He said the department had made an assessment on the damage incurred by the victims and decided to allocate a total of RM34,000 to them.

He said shortly after the storm hit the Jeram area on May 31, Barisan leaders in the division had pooled their resources and donated in cash and kind to the victims.

He said this was done as Barisan leaders in Umno, MCA and MIC were concerned and cared for the victims, which included Malays, Chinese and Indians.

He said it was sad that although the areas hit by the storms were under the opposition parties, their leaders did not render any assistance to help the victims.

"We hope the residents will realise the oppositions can only talk and criticise Barisan and the Government but they cannot help the people when in need," he added.
