KUALA TERENGGANU: On top of receiving the Darjah Ahli Mahkota Terengganu (AMT), in conjunction with the Sultan's birthday, two national cyclists are set to represent the country in next year's Olympics.

Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, 23, and Fatehah Mustapa, 22, were elated to be recognised for their distinguished contribution to the state as well as country.

Mohd Azizulhasni was accompanied by his wife Athiah Ilyana Abd Samad, 25, at the conferment ceremony in conjunction with the 49th birthday of the Sultan of Terengganu Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin who is the Yang Di Pertuan Agong. He said the recognition would certainly spur him to improve further and win the gold medal during the Olympics.

"Gunning for the Olympic gold is certainly the next goal in my career.

"Receiving the medal is certainly a morale boost and motivation to continue to thrive in this sport," he added.

Mohd Azizulhasni will be heading to Melbourne, Australia, to resume preparations for the Olympics.

"I had to take a five-month hiatus from the sport after injuring my leg.

"However, I am fresher than ever now, so my only focus is doing my best in the Olympics," he said.

Commenting on the awards, Fatehah, 22, said she never expected to receive such a high recognition from her home state.

The lass, who hails from Kuala Berang, said she would train harder than ever, even during the fasting month.

"I am pumped for the Olympics.

"A chance to make my state and country proud is an opportunity that doesn't come often," she said adding that, there was no slowing her down as it draws near the international games.

Fellow medal recipient and national cyclist Anuar Manan, 25, said he was happy for his fellow compatriot despite not being chosen for the Olympics.

"My chance will come but I am certainly rooting for them," he said.

The three cyclists were among 259 recipients of medals awarded during a ceremony held Istana Maziah here.

State MCA chairman Toh Chin Yaw, who received the Darjah Datuk Paduka Mahkota Terengganu (DPMT), which also carries the title Datuk, said he was honoured to receive the award.

"I will work harder than ever to ensure the state is recognised for its achievement and will lead the party's state liaison committee to the best of my ability," said Toh.

RM120K raised at fun fair

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 06:15 PM PDT

MALACCA: The recent price increase of goods and services across the board did not place a damper as the spirit of giving rang true with RM120,000 raised during the one-day Montfort Youth Centre (MYC) Open House Carnival.

Organised by the Brothers of St Gabriel religious community and the MYC, the carnival attracted a large turnout at its centre grounds in Ayer Salak here.

There was food and stalls with those offering knick-knacks, fruits and vegetables, clothes and household items, second hand books and magazines, children's toys and playthings and also medical and health check services.

Brisk sales from foodstalls at the event accounted for a good portion of the funds raised.

Centre director Brother Robin Devasagayam said the MYC was listed as an Institute of Public Character and as such, was dependent on donations for its operations.

"We express grateful thanks for the public's generosity in supporting the mission of the Brothers of St Gabriel religious community.

"At this time, together with our open house carnival we have successfully raised RM400,000 for the construction of a multi purpose hall.

"However, we desperately need the balance of RM1.6 million which we hope to collect by the end of this year," he said.

Bro Devasagayam added that a charity dinner concert to mark the centre's 10th anniversary would be held in late September.

He added that the centre operates on an annual budget of close to a million ringgit with about 75% coming through public donations and pledges.
