JOHOR BARU: Some 110 participants in 16 five-man teams had slugged it out in the Tiger Street Football competition, held at Danga Bay recently.

The one-day event organised by Tiger Beer was the Southern region leg of the tournament, which will also travel to Penang, the Klang Valley and Ipoh.

In the Johor tournament, there was a festival-like atmosphere as fans cheered on their favourite teams, with Devil's Brew eventually emerging as the champions of this leg, bagging RM1,000 in prize money.

In the final, they defeated Permilian FC by a score of 6 to 1, with both teams qualifying for the national finals, which will be held in Kuala Lumpur on September 18.

From the national finals, four teams will be chosen to represent the country and compete in the Grand Finals against international teams from countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Brazil, and the Netherlands.

Devil's Brew captain Roshan Bose said that the team usually just played together as friends, and that this was their first time playing together in a tournament as a team.

"Participating in the Tiger Street Football was a unique experience, in particular the oval-shaped pitch which was different from usual futsal courts that we play on," he said.

He said the team was looking forward to pitting their skills with other teams in the national finals, and hoped that they would be able to enter the grand finals as it would be their first time competing against international teams.

Tiger Beer marketing manager Sean Koh said that the competition gave fans and spectators a chance to experience fun, street-themed activities.

"It was a great event with intense competition, while the footballers also entertained the crowd with their deft footwork and skills," he said adding that it had been a celebration of the festive and competitive spirit of football.

Dog show takes into account the best of each breed

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 01:15 AM PDT

THE old saying that 'a dog is a man's best friend' may be clichéd, but it certainly seemed the case during the 4th IOI Mall Dog Show and Competition 2011 in Kulaijaya, Johor.

Jointly organized by the mall and the Malaysian Kennel Association (MKA), the event was a confirmation show to find dogs closely resembling the perfect standard of the breed.

Participant A Benjamin, 31, who entered his German Shepherd Berry in the show said that he liked the breed because they are intelligent and loyal companions.

He added that in a confirmation show, judges would take into account a dog's appearance, movement and temperament when deciding which dog was the best according to the set standards.

Professional dog groomer Valerie Khoo, 32, who entered three dogs in the competition of which two won awards, said she enjoyed participating in dog shows and retained her enthusiasm despite it being hectic.

"I love dogs ever since I was young, and I also enjoy grooming dogs and making them look good," she said.

Khoo added that potential dog owners should not get a dog for the sake of it, but be mindful that dogs are a long-term commitment that requires consistent care and maintenance to ensure that it remains in the best possible condition.

Another dog lover Manmohan Singh, 48, owns 11 dogs including 10 German Shepherds and a Pug.

"A dog is a good companion and I get to exercise when I take them for walks," he said.

Manmohan added that participating in competitions gave him a chance to see dogs other than his own, which helped improve the way he groomed and trained his dogs.

A total of 93 dogs of various breeds divided into seven groups took part in the one-day event, where the dogs first competed within their groups then across the groups to finally be awarded the title of 'Best in Show'.
