State intensifies war against dengue

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 01:46 AM PDT

KUALA TERENGGANU: The state Health department had issued RM345,000 worth of fines this year as part of its enforcement effort to curb the dengue menace.

Department director Dr Nordiyanah Hasan said between January and June, a total of 4,418 notices of cleanliness have been issued to premises, which failed to meet the standard set by the department.

"The number of Dengue cases have drop some 18%, whereby 370 cases are recorded this year compared to 454 in the same period last year.

"The reductions is much owed to our tough enforcement effort," she said during Asean Dengue celebration in Pasir Panjang here recently.

She added that dengue infested area has also been reduced by 33%, whereby only Kampung Duyung Besar was identified as the worst hit with 17 cases.

"We also identified four other hotspots, which are Kuala Ibai, Gong Tok Nasek, Tok Adis and Bukit Besar," she said.

Dr Nurdiyanah said slapping offeders with fines is always the last resort as the department would give ample warning for the premise owners to clean-up.

"We need the cooperation of the local community in combating dengue and preventing the Aedes mosquito breeding.

"We also encourage non-governmental organisations to pitch in the effort as well," she said.

Dr Nurdiyanah said volunteers from the locals were roped in by the department in spreading more awareness on the dengue.
