Corporation to raise awareness for depositors

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 04:24 AM PDT

JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Deposit Insurance Corporation (PDIM) hopes to increase awareness on its role in protecting depositors in the event of bank failure.

PDIM communications and public affairs division acting general manager Hasina Mohamed said many depositors are still unaware that their savings and insurance were protected.

"Deposit insurance protection is provided to anyone who places a deposit of up to RM250,000 in a PIDM member bank, and the agency will reimburse depositors promptly if a member bank fails," she said.

She added that PIDM member banks comprised 25 commercial banks including locally incorporated foreign banks, 17 Islamic banking institutions, 36 insurance companies and 11 Takaful operators.

Hasina said that it was important for the public to be aware of the protection provided by PDIM so as to prevent panic or confusion in case there is a bank failure.

"Although general awareness about the agency is slowly increasing, it is still only at about 22%, and we hope to increase that figure to 35% this year," she said, adding that the agency hoped for over 50% in general awareness by 2016.

She said the PIDM had launched various outreach programmes so that people knew more about its efforts, including educational programmes for students and working professionals.

"We have conducted 26 talks or seminars since April, while last year we held programmes in 200 schools and 50 institutes of higher learning," she said during a consumer financial protection talk held at the Puteri Pacific hotel here.

One of the participants commercial crimes officer Asst Supt R. Saravanan, 39, found the half-day to be a fruitful experience.

"I deal with complainants every day who raise issues of illegal depositing and bank officer fraud, and after attending today's session I feel I can explain to them more clearly about the roles of PDIM and Bank Negara," he said.
