Service industry operators to be recognised for their effort at awards

Posted: 13 Jul 2011 05:14 AM PDT

JOHOR BARU: Holiday makers to Johor can expect better products from service providers in the state, who are gearing up for the upcoming Johor Tourism Awards.

State Tourism and Domestic Trade Committee chairman Hoo Seong Chang said one of the objectives of the award was to motivate restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions to upgrade and improve their services.

"Most of the tourist spots and tourism agencies will be vying for a place among the six categories available so some friendly competition might be good to encourage them to provide better quality service and products.

"Not only that, the award is also a token of appreciation for their efforts in attracting tourists and promoting tourism in the state," he said during a press conference recently.

Hoo added that the public would also play a big part in deciding the winners for the award, which would be announced in January next year.

"This time, 50% of each prize will be judged by a panel and the remaining will be based on public votes via the portal www.johortourismawards.org, amounts of Facebook 'Likes', comments and SMS voting.

"We feel that the public has to have a say in this because they are the ones on the receiving end in appreciating products and services offered by the agencies," he said, adding that the public could also nominate their favourite hotels and restaurants.

He said this year's award comprised of 20 prizes under the six categories, which were accommodation, restaurants, tourism services, tourism product and programme, tourism outstanding contributor and tourism marketing and media.

"We are also introducing new sub-categories including Best Tourism Website, Golfer's Choice for golfing destination, Best Shopping Complex, Most Active Governmental Organisation as well as Best Tourism Education and Training Provider.

"I believe the response will be bigger compared to the previous award, held in 2008," he said, adding that the public could start nominating until the end of September.

Hoo also added that those interested in taking part or nominating, could visit the Johor Tourism Information Centre at the Jotic complex here.

Polyclinic opens for residents

Posted: 13 Jul 2011 05:14 AM PDT

JOHOR BARU: Residents staying in Taman University and its surrounding areas can seek treatment at the newly opened polyclinic in the area.

The 1.2ha-clinic which started operations on July 1, registered more than 100 patients just two hours after it opened its doors at 8am.

Nusajaya assemblyman Datuk Aziz Sapian said the RM16mil polyclinic caters to the medical needs of people staying in the surrounding areas, including Taman Mutiara Rini, Taman Skudai Ria, Taman Pulai Perdana and Taman Pulai Indah.

"The number of patients who visited the clinic in the first two hours showed there was a need for such a facility to be set up in the area," he said during his visit to the clinic recently.

Gelang Patah MP Tan Ah Eng, who was also present, suggested that the clinic's operating hours be extended from between 8am and 5pm to a 24-hour clinic.

"The clinic was set-up to cater to the 300,000 population in the area and emergencies can happen any time," she said.

One of them, cleaner M. Loganayagi, 40, said the clinic adds to the convenience of the people as they no longer had to travel far to see a doctor.

"I was happy when my neighbours told me about the new clinic.

"Before this, I had to travel for about one and a half hours to the Hospital Sultanah Aminah by bus to get my high blood pressure medication," she said.

Housewife Lee L Fong, 43, said the opening of the clinic was timely.

"The location of the polyclinic makes it easier for us to get there by bus," said the mother-of-four.

District health officer Dr Roslinda Abdul Rahman said there was currently a shortage of staff at the clinic.

"There are now six doctors including a dentist, 15 nurses, three clinic attendants and one driver.

"If one doctor tends to about 50 patients per day, the ideal number of doctors needed in the clinic is 10," she said, adding that those with inquiries or emergencies could call the clinic's general line at 07-521 6800.

The clinic, which opens from 8am offers dental care, mother and children's clinic, blood test laboratories and a pharmacy among other services.
