Cobra boys capture NS Royal Sevens rugby title Posted: 12 Jul 2011 06:11 AM PDT COMBINED Old Boys Rugby Association (Cobra) became the champions of the Negri Sembilan Royal Sevens rugby competition when they defeated Tsunami Bandar Penawar 35-19 in the final at the Seremban Municipal Council (MPS) ground in Seremban recently. Cobra, with five Fijian players in their side, were simply too good for their opponents. Tsunami Bandar Penawar's Sazali Hafiz Mohd Nor was voted as the Best Player of the competition. Cobra and Tsunami Bandar Penawar qualified for the final with identical 19-14 score against Asas RC and Keris Conlay respectively in the semi-finals. In fact rugby enthusiasts had expected a home team - Negri Sembilan Wanderers - to qualify for the final. But NS Wanderers fine run in the competition was stopped in the quarter-finals. NS Wanderers made amends by emerging as the winners in the Plate category when they defeated Sibu RC 19-12 in the final. In the schools category, South Africa's Trafalgar High SchooT Blue (THSB) became the champions after a narrow 20-16 win against Tsunami SSTMI Bandar Penawar in the final. THSB qualified for the final after outclassing Syed Sirajuddin Sports School 19-7 while Tsunami SSTMI Bandar Penawar scored a convincing 24-0 win over Arau Vocational SS in the semi-finals. The sponsors of the two day competition, held for the 13th year, were Power, Power, Samsung Group Malaysia, Berjaya Corporation, Ann Joo Resources, F&N Beverages Marketing, Nestle Products, The Royale Bintang Seremban, Bina Terbit and Jimah Energy Ventures. Negri Sembilan Rugby Union royal patron Tunku Naquiyuddin Tuanku Ja'afar gave away the prizes to the winners. Full Feed Generated by Get Full RSS, sponsored by USA Best Price. |
Young racer Siti Nursuhaida aims to don national colours Posted: 12 Jul 2011 06:11 AM PDT JOHOR BARU: She may be only 15-years-old but that did not deter Siti Nursuhaida Jaafri Abdullah's ambition to represent the country as a professional motocross racer. The feisty Kelantanese said she felt that the sport was challenging not only to the body but to the mind as well. "Just like any other sports, motocross needs a lot of stamina, will power and strategising in order to excel. "I learnt that from my father, who has been taking part in motorsports since he was young," said Siti Nursuhaida, who was fourth among six siblings. She was one of the participants who took part in the recent Malaysian Motocross and Cubcross championships, at Plaza Angsana here. Siti Nursuhaida who started riding two years ago, added that she trains three times a week in a dirt track in Machang to keep herself fit. When asked if the sport would affect her studies, she smiled and shook her head. "I have a timetable drawn out where I usually train in the afternoon and do my homework at night," she quipped. She also said that she has dreams of becoming a professional motocross racer one day and would work hard to achieve that. "I still have a lot more to learn and I am glad I have a dad who is into the sport as much as I am. "I feel happy that more and more girls are getting involved in tough sports like this and we should not let the challenges stop us from reaching for our dreams," she said. Another participant 32-year-old Shinichi Kaga, who hails from Japan, said he still has passion for the sport even after 27 years. "Motocross riding is popular back home and it was a new experience as it was my first time competing in Malaysia. "I specialise in freestyle stunts in my hometown Akita City and sometimes visit other cities with my team to perform stunts," said the professional racer. Meanwhile, the tournament's event manager Mustapha Kamal Razuan said the two-day event saw the participation of about 148 motocross enthusiasts from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and Australia.
