Umno the only party protecting Islam says division chief

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 06:28 PM PDT

MUAR: Umno is now the only political party that strives to protect Islam and its values following a decision by PAS to discard its struggle for the religion.

Muar Umno division chief Datuk Mohd Ismail Mohd Shah said PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang was quoted as saying that the party would champion for a welfare state, not Islamic nation.

He added that since the opposition party no longer wanted to strive for Islam and Islamic values, it's now left to Umno to struggle for the religion and protect its position in the country.

"We call all Umno Youth members and all Malay youths in the Muar division to give importance to our fight to protect Islam and Islamic values.

"However, we must also protect the rights of other races and religions in the country," he said at the opening the Muar Umno Youth delegates conference here recently.

Mohd Ismail, who is also a special officer to Mentri Besar for Maharani, said Umno had been very committed in its struggles to fight for the Malays.

He said the struggles, however, had seemed to fade lately due to factions and internal politics within the party and he feared that such disunity would weaken the party.

Mohd Ismail also urged party members to work as a team towards strengthening the Muar Barisan Nasional in its quest to recapture the Maharani state seat from the opposition.

Earlier, Muar Umno Youth chief Datuk Razali Ibrahim said PAS, which wanted to make Malaysia a welfare state, could not even develop Kelantan which it had ruled for 22 years.

He said some 600,000 Kelantanese had to migrate to other states to work as there was little development in Kelantan.

"If PAS cannot develop and make Kelantan prosper, I dont think the party can help other states to develop and prosper," he said.

Razali, who is the Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, also added that the DAP-led government in Penang was also interfering with Islamic affairs over the call for election for mosque committees.

"It is unconstitutional for any party in Penang to interfere in Islamic affairs as the subject is under the jurisdiction of the Agong," he added.

Councils advised to set up own abattoirs

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 03:29 PM PDT

KUALA TERENGGANU: State Islamic religious councils have been advised to set up their own abattoirs to ensure confidence among Muslims that meat and poultry slaughter processes are halal.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Major-General (Rtd) Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said the respective councils could achieve this by forming a subsidiary company or by cooperating with other companies.

He added that there are people who still questioned the halal status of slaughtered poultry.

"So, I suggest that state Islamic religious councils set up their own slaughterhouses and obtain a certificate to restore confidence in the public," he said at the launch the 21st Civil and Syarak Law Coordination Conference here.

The conference was also attended by Malaysian Islamic Development Department director-general Othman Mustapha and state religious and information committee chairman Khazan Che Mat.

Jamil Khir hoped non-Muslim operators would also heed syariah requirements by providing Muslim butchers including foreigners. — Bernama.
