Registration for NGOs within five days Posted: 27 Jul 2011 05:09 AM PDT NON-GOVERNMENTAL organisations (NGOs) can get their associations registered within five days provided they have the required documents, said National Registration and Society Division undersecretary Siti Zauyah Osman. She said this to reporters after launching a course for NGOs on effective management of societies organised by the Selangor Registrar of Societies (ROS) at SKJ (C) Han MingBatu 4, Puchong. It was attended by 55 NGOs whose members learned about managing their associations successfully and the process of submitting their yearly statements. According to Selangor ROS director Noraffendy Abd Khalid, there are 650 societies registered and 1,000 deregistered last year in Selangor. "We will send notices to remind the NGOs to submit their yearly statements," he said. Siti Zauyah said there were several reasons for an NGO to be deregistered such as the failure to submit their yearly statement. Special officer of the Home Affairs Minister and Puchong BN parliamentary liaison officer Datuk Loo Yeng Peng, said the course was to improve the management of NGOs. "Hopefully, the NGOs can be more productive and effective," he said. He also said it was important for NGOs and the government to work hand in hand. "As a civil society movement, we should understand the needs of the rakyat and NGOs can serve as a medium between the government and the people to provide feedback," he said. He added that the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2011 ranked Malaysia the 19th safest country. "People have asked me 'How can Malaysia be ranked a safer country than Singapore (24th)? "There are many aspects taken into account, not just the number of crime cases," he said. Also present was BN Kinrara state coordinator Datuk Wong Hock Aun.
