Malaysia to host World Freestyle Football Championship

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 03:39 AM PDT

MALAYSIA will play host to the birth of a revolutionary new global championship series for the fast growing and exciting sport of freestyle football in September this year.

The event, the World Freestyle Football Championship (WFFC) Tour Kuala Lumpur 2011, will take place at the Sunway Pyramid Shopping Centre on Sept 17 and 18.

It was officially launched by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek at the Taylor's Lakeside Campus recently.

Shabery said to many, the best thing about freestyle football is its simplicity.

"You do not need a court, a field or a partner. All you need to enjoy this sport is a ball. Freestyle football is about skills and creativity.

"As Malaysians, it should come easy being that sepak takraw is a sport Malaysia has developed," he said.

"Currently, it can be said that Malaysian football is experiencing some kind of revival. It is our most popular sport and having seen the excitement and skill present in freestyle football, I am sure that by organising an event of this stature,

"Malaysians would find freestyle football equally exciting and fascinating," he added.

Organised by the Freestyle Football Federation (F3) — the world wide body for freestyle football — and the Asian Freestyle Football Federation (AF3), the WFFC Tour is supported by the Youth and Sports Ministry who have sponsored the event as part of their initiative to boost the appeal of sports to the Malaysian youth and promote the country as a destination for world class sporting events.

"We are very pleased to be kicking off this world tour in Malaysia and having the support of the government is fantastic. In a nation full of football fans, and also the country from which the game of sepak takraw originates, I am sure freestyle football will generate massive interest amongst Malaysians.

"The chance to watch world champions performing all of their best tricks will be something truly memorable for the fans," F3 president Dan Wood told a press conference.

"There's nothing to stop anyone from getting involved with the art of freestyle. It builds confidence, balance, rhythm, self-discipline and body awareness in a natural way. All you need is a ball," he added.

AF3 president Stuart Ramalingam, who is also the CEO of the Malaysian Super League (MSL), has been working closely with the F3 to bring the WFFC Tour event to Malaysia and give Malaysian fans a chance to be part of the event.

"The WFFC Tour will be a real treat for football fans, but we also want to involve Malaysians. Therefore, we will also be organising the Malaysian Freestyle Football Championship," Stuart told a press conference.

The Malaysian Freestyle Football Championship will have a online element included where contestants will be able to send in videos of their best move in which the best 16 will be shortlisted for the finals.

This year's WFFC Tour launch is a prelude to the full blown series that will see the top 16 freestyle footballers in the world, tour 10 cities each year, battling it out through a range of challenges to become the official World Champion.

The founding participants of the tour will consist of all the champions from the leading nations in freestyle football, while certain places will be made available at the start of each subsequent year's tour for the next generation of champions coming through.

For the Kuala Lumpur 2011 launch, the most active champions in the past three years have been selected to pit their skills against each other as they vie for the coveted first freestyle football World Champion title.

The event will be broadcast live on Astro Arena.
