Left to burn openly

Posted: 21 Jul 2011 06:53 AM PDT

In recent times we have been quick to point a finger at Sumatra whenever haze shows up in our atmosphere.

For over a year now, I have been contacting the Department of Environment (DOE), the Klang Municipal Council and the state government to report incidents of open burning between the Kampung Jawa exit and the Jalan Banting exit on the Kesas highway and certain stretches of Jalan Banting.

I even went as far as to provide particular areas where and when the burning took place but my efforts were all in vain.

DOE told me that they were aware of this menace but it was hard to catch the culprits.

I find this hard to believe in a day and age when landowners are provided with titles and the registry of titles is in the custody of the district office.

The residents of the areas surrounding the open burning have to put up with fumes almost every night and this lasts till morning.

I am surprised that no authority has decided to act.

My electricity bill has gone up because of constant use of air-conditioning but even this does not seem to help very much.

Recently, for the second time, I provided an officer in the state government with information on some open burning sites and I am now waiting and hoping for positive action to be taken.

I think we should clean up our own backyard before pointing fingers at Sumatra.
