Fire victims get timely aid

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 04:22 AM PDT

THE victims of the Kampung Chubadak fire in Sentul can look forward to celebrating Hari Raya Puasa next month.

All 12 victims of the blaze that occurred at 5.45am on Tuesday morning were devastated and were doubtful of celebrating Raya.

Faizah Ismail, 39, was up at the crack of dawn on Tuesday, preparing her six children for school when she heard the screams of her neighbours.

"I thought the fire would be far away from my house but when I stepped out I realised it was near my house and only thought of the safety of my children," she said.

Faizah ran out with a bag containing diapers and some clothes.

Like her, Mohd Salleh Ahmad,60, was only concerned for his children, including his pregnant daughter who is due next week.

"Everything was over in mere minutes. We only had time to save ourselves. We left everything inside, I estimate our losses at RM20,000," he added.

Faizah and her fellow neighbours were offered low-cost flats at PPR Batu Muda for rent by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) during a visit by the Deputy Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry Datuk M. Saravanan on Wednesday.

After hearing about the incident, Saravanan requested the DBKL to provide RM300 in aid and procured offers for the flats from the housing department for 11 families.

He also spoke to Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin who also said an extra RM1,000 should be given to each family from the Federal Territories Foundation.

Together with Deputy Foreign Minister Senator Kohilan Pillay, DBKL's deputy director-general Datuk Mohd Amin Nordin, Batu Umno chairman Yahaya Mat Ghani and Batu MIC chairman Ramanathan Chinnu, Saravanan handed out the offer letters and cash aid to the victims.

The foundation and Batu Umno division also donated school uniforms for the affected children.

The families can move in at any time but Saravanan said the vacant units at PPR Batu Muda would need to be fixed first.

"The units there have been empty for quite some time and people have vandalised it so I have already asked DBKL to send over the contractors to do reapairs as soon as possible," he added.

To ease the burden of the affected families, rent for the low-cost flats will be free for the first three months.

Kop fans in high spirits

IT WAS an exciting build-up for Arsenal fans as their team humbled Malaysia with a 4-0 win on Wednesday.

The match was the first of the three Malaysia is supposed to play against English Premier League teams.

The other two are against Liverpool and Chelsea at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Enthusiasm is running high for Liverpool supporters who lined up to pick up complimentary match tickets as well as training passes to catch the Reds in action at the Studio V in 1Utama Shopping Centre.

Liverpool supporter Elizebeth Low and her friend, Amin Yusop, led the pack in their successful attempt to be in front.

The duo arrived at the shopping complex 26 hours before the tickets and training passes were distributed.

Low, a 26-year-old operations assistant, said she took a day off to stay in the hunt for tickets.

"We walked around the mall before securing our places in front of the studio as early as 1am. It was definitely worth the wait," she added.

After failing in their attempt to get a pass in a similar redemption outing for the Arsenal match last Sunday, the 27-year-old Amin was determined not to be a second time loser.

"We saw the good turnout on the previous occasion and we decided to get here earlier than the others.

"I have bought my ticket for the Liverpool match but it is a different excitement to receive another in a thrilling way.

"It was fun with my friend (Elizebeth) also assured of getting the tickets and passes. It will be my first time soaking up the atmosphere watching Liverpool live in action," said Amin, who has been following Liverpool's progress since 1993.

Chin Phuan Woo also showed compassion to fulfill his son's dream of watching the match.

Chin, a retiree was seen filling up his personal particulars on the final and fifth cut-out coupon.

The 57-year-old was among the lucky ones before the allocation exercise ended after almost an hour.

"My son (Kevin Chin) was dejected when he went home without the ticket for the Arsenal match.

"Today, he could not be here and I felt that I cannot afford to disappoint him again. I arrived at 1.30pm and had a pleasant time because it was a good chance to get to know new friends, who also turned up to join the occasion," said Chin.

Pro Events teamed up with The Star to reward readers and offered a total of 180 tickets for tomorrow's Liverpool-Malaysia match at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Readers collected five consecutive cut-out coupons printed in StarSport from July 8-12 in exchange for a match ticket each.

In addition, The Star subscribers with receipts from their vendors for either April or May also snapped up the 120 exclusive passes to watch Liverpool's training session yesterday.

For the upcoming Chelsea match on July 21, the five coupons for cut-out are in The Star from July 13-17.

And the redemption session will be held at Studio V in 1Utama Shopping Mall on July 18 from 8pm to 10pm.
