PKNS happy to see junior development programme beginning to show results

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 06:09 AM PDT

THE PKNS FC Academy can be proud of their success not only in the Premier League but also in junior competitions.

PKNS FC Academy technical director Mazlan Mohd Diah said this season has been fruitful as players from the junior development programme have recorded impressive results in local age group competitions.

In the recent 1Malaysia Cardiff City (1MCC) junior football league, PKNS, despite not being among the favourites, made an impact by qualifying for the final. They met favourites CIMB-YFA in the final at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Bandar Tun Razak.

Although the focus was on CIMB-YFA, PKNS stunned the favourites with a hard fought 4-3 win to capture the crown which came with purse of RM10,000. The management, impressed with the team's success, allowed the players to share the cash.

PKNS' captain Shafizi Iqmal Md Khirudin was voted as the Man of the Match. He also emerged as the 1MCC top scorer with 38 goals.

Prior to winning the 1MCC league, PKNS were also the champions in the Kota Damansara League.

The team, coached by Rashid Zainot and Norsham Abu Bakar are currently being groomed for the Under-14 age group next year.

Rashid said it would be difficult for them to make their presence felt in the age group next season.

"They will be up against the bigger boys. So we are not expecting anything in the first season. But they will be ready to take the honours in the second,'' said Rashid.

Mazlan said the results were because of the systematic training programme which caters for five age groups - Under-8, Under-10, Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16.

"All the players from the Under-12 squad were graduates of the Under-10 programme initiated two years ago. They have been together for almost two years and we are delighted with their progress,'' said Mazlan.

Surprisingly, the programme, when launched in 2001, was for PKNS employees' children only. But word spread and children from around the vicinity also wanted to be part of the programme.

"Today we have about 200 youngsters coming from all over the Klang Valley. The programme has grown in stature and we are convinced that we would be able to produce talented players for the state and country,'' said Mazlan.

As the Premeir League champions, PKNS have gained promotion to the Super League in the M-League. And PKNS will have to field a team in the President's Cup. Their current Under-16 squad are expected to feature prominently in the President's Cup team.

To gain exposure, PKNS had fielded a team in the Super Division in the Football Association of Selangor (FAS) league.

Mazlan said they were not among the top teams in the Super Division.

"We were playing against some of the established teams in Selangor. They did fairly well and we convinced that the experience will make our player better for the new season,'' said Mazlan.

As part of their development programme, the PKNS FC academy will be organising age group competitions, including an Under-18 championship later this month. Then the PKNS GM Cup will be held later this year.

Mazlan said they were pleased with the active participation of parents in the programme.

"The parents have been supportive and make their presence felt during training as well as competitions. We really welcome their support,'' said Mazlan.
