Free tickets to Harry Potter movies

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 04:39 AM PDT

AFTER a decade of spellbinding thrills and magical cinematic moments, muggles around the world will bid Harry Potter farewell as the boy wizard readies himself for the final battle in Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

A worldwide phenomenon, Harry Potter first took to the big screen in 2001, four years after the release of the novel written by J.K Rowling, with the first movie, Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone.

The movie franchise is produced by David Heyman and stars Daniel Radcliffe in the title role; and Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as Harry's best pals, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, respectively.

To date, the seven Harry Potter movies have earned in excess of US$6bil (RM18bil) in worldwide receipts with the first and seventh films topping the all-time list of 30 highest-grossing films worldwide.

The last chapter in the series will see Harry Potter going against his arc enemy, Lord Voldermort, played by Ralph Fiennes.

In an interview to promote the final movie, Radcliffe describes the difference between Deathly Hallows Part 1 and the upcoming Deathly Hallows Part 2: "In simplistic terms, the first part was a road movie where Harry, Ron and Hermione go in search of the Horcruxes and where their friendship is tested. The second part is a battle movie. It's action all the way. Harry and the rest return to Hogwarts School for one last stand against the dark forces."

Filming on the last day, Radcliffe says, was an emotional experience. "I wasn't thinking 'What am I going to do now', I was thinking how much I was going to miss these people. For the last 10 years of my life, I've worked with this cast and crew. They have been a part of my life. I am going to miss them all."

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 opens nationwide on July 14. In anticipation of the final instalment, eCentral.my, The Star Online's entertainment portal, is organising a Harry Potter Retrospective in partnership with Warner Bros Pictures and TGV Cinemas and supported by Galaxie magazine and Red FM from July 5 till 11, climaxing with the premiere of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 on two dates, July 12 and 18.

Screening of the Harry Potter Retrospective will be held at TGV Sunway Pyramid at 8.30pm. Visit eCentral.my for details on ticket redemptions.

Killer Elite

ROBERT De Niro is in a movie with Jason Statham? Wow. It also features Clive Owen (wearing a thick moustache) and Yvonne Strahovski (of TV's Chuck). To top it all off, Killer Elite is director Gary McKendry's first feature. What's the attraction? Well, the hook must be that the film is based on a true story based on the accounts of an ex-special ops agent (Statham). It starts with Danny Bryce being forced out of retirement when his mentor – Hunter (De Niro), who is like a father to him – is kidnapped. In order to make the rescue, he must complete a near-impossible mission of killing three assassins. While the plot sounds right up Statham's alley (there is a scene in the film where the guy somersaults while being tied to a chair), the rest of the cast seem out of place. It gets more confusing when the song accompanying the trailer is, erm, Scorpion's Rock You Like A Hurricane.

Killer Elite is scheduled for release in Malaysia sometime in September. Watch the trailer at www.youtube.com/watch?v=dz4ua7Aq358&amp

Life’s adversities

Director Hashim Rejab's Sekali Lagi adds up to one tragic love triangle.

WHETHER you're generally sappy or cynical, once in a while, everyone needs a little romance. And just like true love, the perfect romance movie is hard to find. Of course, we have high expectations – we want palpable chemistry between the stars with enormous odds for our lovers to overcome.

Being a romantic at heart, the idea of seeing Lisa Surihani pairing up with Shaheizy Sam and Bront Palarae as a suitor on the side, on the big screen, is pretty exciting.

The affable and hard-working Lisa is the winner of the best actress award at the 23rd Malaysian Film Festival (2010) for her portrayal in movie Lagenda Budak Setan. Shaheizy, who is better known as Sam, won the best supporting actor award in Evolusi KL Drift 2 and Bront took home the best actor award in Belukar in the same festival.

The three are known to be highly-committed to their profession and in Sekali Lagi, they are involved in a tragic love triangle.

Sekali Lagi, directed by Hashim Rejab and produced by Metrowealth Pictures, is about an autistic Arman (Shaheizy Sam) who develops friendship with a little girl, Amy, after an incident involving a snatch thief.

Arman is a man with the mind of a five-year-old (after he underwent surgery) and his friendship with little Amy makes the little girl a lot happier and more confident. Unfortunately, it makes her mother Sheila (Lisa Surihani), a single mother with a dark and bitter past, very unhappy.

For director Hashim, 35, working on Sekali Lagi with a star-studded cast was a great experience.

Obviously, the focus of the RM1.5mil movie is on Arman. Hashim said that Sam played the role brilliantly.

Sam is the most sought-after actor at the moment with hits such as Evolusi KL Drift 2, Ngangkung, Adnan Semp-It and Kongsi.

"If we have seen Sam play different roles in heavy drama, comedy or action flick, in Sekali Lagi viewers will see him in a different light," said Hashim in a telephone interview on Tuesday.

"We did a lot of research on the Arman character with the brain surgery gone wrong.

"Sam's such a talented actor and I'm just blown away by his acting skills," gushed Hashim whose directing credits include movies Papa I Love You, Halimunan and the up-coming 3 Temu Janji and TV drama series Adam Maya.

Hashim added that filming took about 22 days and the movie was shot in the Klang Valley.

"I'm very happy with the result, in terms of techniques, cinematography and acting," said Hashim, adding that his biggest challenge during filming was to project how Sam's character balances his emotions between a five-year-old and an adult.

What the actors say

Lisa Surihani (Sheila), 25

"Playing Sheila is one of the most challenging roles I have been offered, so far.

"Sheila, a single mother, is burdened with bitterness and anger for the past five years after her husband divorced her on the same day her father passed away.

"Playing a single mother with a child was a big challenge for me as I'm single and I wouldn't know how it feels like to be a mother. It was hard for me to understand Sheila's feeling as a mother and a divorcee.

"She carries a lot of emotional baggage; bitterness and anger all bottled up inside. The character is the total opposite of me. My character is also being wooed by Haris (Bront).

"To be honest, I was struggling during the filming but I'm lucky as Bront and director Hashim showed me how to deliver my role. We had a lot of discussions which were helpful. I have done my best and hope it will make an impact on the audience."

Shaheizy Sam (Arman), 28

"I was excited playing Arman as it was different from all the other roles I had portrayed.

"But I have to be honest with you, playing Arman was the most challenging for me as an actor.

"To prepare for my role I did a lot of research because it is a big challenge for me to play an adult with the mind of a five-year-old," said the award-winning actor.

"I guess it is my nature to try out something new as it challenges my credibility as an actor," said Sam who would lock himself in a room when reading the script.

"I used to observe my young relatives and other children at play and how they interact," said the actor who has the habit of visualising his roles prior to shooting.

"Throughout filming, I visualised myself as a child and detached myself from being an adult.

"If viewers like my acting as Arman, then I have to thank my director, cast and crew for their help," he said.

Sekali Lagi is playing in cinemas nationwide.
