Nine-hour power surge causes damage to appliances

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 04:41 PM PDT

JOHOR BARU: A cable theft at the nearby main substation had resulted in financial losses to 50 business premises and households in Taman Nusa Bestari.

The incident caused a power surge and damaged electrical and household appliances including automatic gates belonging to the residents here on Friday.

Residents in the neighbourhood were frustrated and wanted Tenaga Nasional Bhd to compensate them for their losses.

Housewife G. Vasanthi, 32, said she saw sparks on her television set while she was watching her favourite programme in the afternoon.

"Smoke was also coming out from the ceiling fan and other electrical appliances.

"I was shocked at the sight of the smoke so I switched everything off and grabbed all my three children out of the house for fear of the worse," she said.

Another resident Yong Hooi Meng, 46, said he was cleaning his aquarium and noticed that the air-pump was damaged during the surge.

"I heard a loud bang coming from the aquarium and was surprised to see my goldfishes floating."

Yong claimed his total loss amounted to RM10,000.

TNB Johor (Distribution Division) customer service and marketing senior manager Mohamed Noh Md Seth said that thieves stole some wire cables from a sub-station in the neighbourhood.

"Some culprits have broken into the facility to steal the cables.

"I advise residents to buy a voltage regulator as it will help prevent power surge in the event of over voltage," he said during a meeting session with the affected residents.

In relation to the matter, Pengkalan Rinting assemblyman Chia Song Cheng hoped that TNB would increase security at the sub-stations to prevent the incident from happening again.
