RM120,000 funds raised for cancer awareness

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 06:00 PM PDT

Malacca: The Relay For Life (RFL) organised in the historical state for the very first time recently by the Malacca Cancer Society (MCS) under the auspices of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia drew around 2,500 participants from all walks of life.

In the process around RM120,000 was raised for cancer awareness, education and support projects and programmes for the benefit of the local community.

The overnight 16-hour fund raiser and cancer awareness community-based event held at the Tun Fatimah Stadium in Bukit Serendit also witnessed Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam dropping by to catch up with proceedings.

The RFL uniting millions of people across six continents in the fight against cancer is celebrated in over twenty-two countries and currently commemorates its 27th global anniversary.

Observed in Malaysia for the seventh consecutive year, the RFL event after its Malacca debut will be held in Kuala Lumpur from July 16-17 at the Stadium UKM in Bangi and then in Penang from October 1-2 at the Penang Municipal Park (Youth Park).

The local event witnessed participants walking solo or in groups around the stadium's running track for short periods and over staggered times while making and accepting monetary pledges and contributions. There was also the 'Survivor Walk' where all cancer survivors took to the track together with 'Celebrities Give Back' participants headed by former Miss Malaysia Datuk Yasmin Yusof.

Also set up within the stadium complex were numerous canopied sites. At these points, everything from food and refreshments, health checks and social counseling, sales of novelty luminary bags laced with messages of comfort, support, encouragement and concern for fallen cancer survivors, and victims.

Care givers, games, telematches, sales of crafts and arts as well as singing and dancing presentations were either conducted, featured or made available for the benefit of all participants and members of the general public in efforts to swell the MCS coffers.

According to MCS co-ordinator Miki Chua, the event placed emphasis on a three-fold premise. For starters, it celebrated the strength of cancer patients and survivors while at the same time rendering hope and support to those still fighting the dreaded disease.

She added "Secondly, rememberance comes into focus apart from the fund raising aspect. Here, we remember loved ones and friends who lost the cancer battle and struggle. At the relay, we walked side by side with people affected by cancer to find inner healing, peace of mind and solace.

"Thirdly, the fightback rally is sounded. We together as a community must always help spread the message of cancer awareness and prevention.

"We should also volunteer our services if time permitted as caregivers or supporters of various programmes or projects initiated by the MCS for the benefit of cancer survivors or patients.

"Generally speaking, the recent RFL is a celebration of life. We bring together survivors, caregivers, supporters, friends, family members and work associates and concerned members of the public to celebrate those who gone through the cancer journey and who are now living out meaningful and purposeful lives".

Dirty beach mars image

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 05:50 PM PDT

DESARU: Beach goers and picnickers have expressed their disappointment with the dirty public beach here which they described has marred the image of the Johor tourism sector.

Many give a thumbs-down to the state of cleanliness of the beach, which was once a popular weekend gateway for locals and Singaporeans in the early 1970s and mid-1980s.

Litters left by picnickers can been seen scattered along the beach area as well as damaged wooden benches and stagnant pond which is the prefect breeding ground for mosquitoes.

"I drive all the way from Johor Baru using the recently opened expressway but what did I get here in return? Dirty beach,'' said self-employed Abdul Rahim Moin, 42.

He said while motorists could now reach Desaru about 30 to 45 minutes from two hours prior to the opening of the expressway, the dirty beach was really a let down.

Abdul Rahim, said the Johor's Sultan has a valid reason to get angry with the local authorities for failing to maintain and upkeep the cleanliness of certain parts of Johor.

Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar had chided local councilors for sleeping on their jobs during the Kembara Mahkota 2011 which ended recently. (June 28).

During the four-day expedition which covered almost 800km journey to several districts, the Sultan personally observed the lackadaisical attitude of the local councilors.

"Broken bottles deliberately thrown along the beach can pose danger to picnickers and something must be done before someone gets injured," he said.

Civil servant Omar Yasin, 43, also voiced a similar view saying the public beach here was well-maintained during Desaru's popular days about two decades ago.

He said picnickers would not resort to throw their rubbish discriminately if there were enough dustbins placed by the authority along the beach for them.

Omar also said the RM4 per entry imposed for cars to park at the parking area by the beach was unreasonable as the parking area was also not well-maintained.

"Apart from the rubbish, the stagnant pond can become the breeding spot for mosquitoes and children might fall into it as there is no railing around it," he said.

Omar sarcastically remarked instead of getting tanned skin, picnickers might go home with mosquito bites or even dengue fever.

Meanwhile, Singaporean William Tan, 38, who came with his family members reminisced how clean the place was he used to camp here regularly with his schoolmates during school holidays.

Tan said he decided to make brief stop at Desaru on his way to enjoy seafood at Sungai Rengit to let his children having good times by the beach but was disappointed with the dirty beach.
