Technician fails to provide enough proof of damage caused by caterer at function

JOHOR BARU: A computer technician filed a case at the Consumer Claims Tribunal after his wedding reception caterer failed to provide enough for all his guests.

Many of his guests walked away without food during the event and to make matters worse, some even ticked off the wedding couple saying that it was the worst wedding that they had ever attended.

Leong Chiew Fei, 33, said he felt humiliated as he had actually catered for 350 people but the food was not enough to feed his 280 guests during his wedding on March 12.

"On that day I even ordered an additional RM900 worth of additional dishes but that too was not enough," he said, adding that he spent a total of RM24,200 for the reception which was held at a café in Plentong.

Leong brought at least six witnesses to substantiate his claim for RM17,000.

The café's representative said they had three years experience in the business and had not encountered such problems before.

After a three-hour hearing, tribunal president Mohd Nasrim Datuk Mohd Salleh decided to throw the case out, citing that there was no proof of damage on Leong's part.

He also said that the claimant failed to produce adequate proof to show the restaurant did not provide enough food for his banquet.

He advised Leong to seek judicial review at a high court if he was unhappy.

In another case, a private college here was ordered to refund RM9356.40 to a student after she decided to withdraw from her studies after one week into the semester.

Chin Kah Mun, 18, claimed her father paid the college a total amount of RM11,800 for a foundation course on Apr 6.

"One week after classes began, I decided to withdraw from the course as I received an offer from another college with more affordable fees," she said.

Mohd Nasrim then directed the college to refund the money to Chin within 14 days after the award was read out.

Proper planning needed to boost tourism in Malacca

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 01:43 AM PDT

MALACCA: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam has ordered the State River and Coastline Development Authority to prepare a comprehensive calendar of events for next year's Malacca River Fest.

The Chief Minister said the move to detail-out activities for the fest could attract more foreign tourists.

"We could globalise the river fest as tourists from other countries can plan their travel here particularly to participate in the event," he told reporters after flagging-off a dragon boat race that was organised in-conjunction with the one month Malacca River Fest.

Mohd Ali said it was disappointing to note that only Indonesia had sent participants for the dragon boat race as such an event could attract enthusiasts from as far as China, Taiwan and Macaa.

Some 29 teams, mostly locals took part in the race that was held to extensively promote the fest to the masses.

He said by detailing out the activities for the river fest, the state could promote the event as one of its main tourism products.

Mohd Ali hoped the authorities could outline interesting side-events for the 2012 fest and post it into websites so it could be accessed by foreign tourists.

"My aim is to turn the fest into the equivalent to the scale organised during the San Antonio River Festival in the United States, hence we have to emulate the approach taken by the organisers there.

"Therefore, I hope the calendar will be prepared in the next two weeks so I can instruct my officers to embark on the overseas promotion blitz, at once," he added.

Dept organises burial rites course for students

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 01:41 AM PDT

KUALA TERENGGANU: While it was meant to be a sombre lesson for some 140 students here on how to manage a dead person, the course brought giggles and smiles to the young participants.

This was because the course organisers chose to use "live bodies" rather than mannequins during the practical lessons of dressing the dead.

The models were chosen from among the pupils and secondary school students who took part in the one-day course organised by the Terengganu Welfare Services Department recently.

A key feature of the course was a visual display of bodies of people who died under different circumstances, either from diseases, accidents or other causes.

The students were also shown how to prepare a dead body for burial according to Muslim rites, including methods of bathing the deceased, dressing up the body and putting it in a coffin for burial.

"I felt a bit strange at first to attend the seminar, as the main theme is death," said Form Two student Amy Hazwani Nazri of SMK Seri Payong.

"However, it became fun when we got to dress our friends in burial cloth," she said, in between giggles.

She said the visuals depicting dead people was scary but she felt the course, in general, was useful as she may one day be one of those preparing a dead body for burial.

Schoolmate Siti Haliza Abd Ghani said, "I learned not to take our lives for granted as life can easily be taken away."

Form Three student Uwais Asghar Daniel Nor Aslan Azizi, from SMK Merchang, said being a fan of horror flicks, he felt excited to attend the course.

"I am not easily spooked by horror movies, but death as depicted during the course is really chilling.

"I learnt that bodies of departed ones must be treated with respect and I really learned to appreciate the work done by coroners and morticians," he said.

Terengganu Welfare Services Department director Zuhaimi Omar said the course was aimed at preparing the young in various aspects of managing the dead.

"We don't want them to be shocked when the time comes for them to perform such duty on their family members or friends.
