New water polo coach expects to rake in a medal in the coming SEA Games

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 04:59 PM PDT

MALACCA: Fan Kow Jan is having the best of both worlds as a civil and structural engineering consultant and raking in success in the water polo scene.

A self-taught coach, the 60-year-old played for the state senior team from 1975 to 1982.

He also won the state sports council Coach of the Year (2010) award last month and was appointed as the national coach for the SEA Games in Indonesia later this year.

Fan, who led Malacca's water polo teams to victory with gold medals at the Sukma at Bukit Jalil recently, said the men's and women's training squads would only be finalised in mid-September following the national open invitational meet hosted by Malacca.

Currently, he added, the players have been adhering to their respective state training programmes.

"However, following the Malacca Open, centralised training will commence here at the Stadium Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre.

"I will have just under two months to whip the teams into top shape and good form to garner podium finishes at the biennial games.

"With the likes of Thailand, Singapore and hosts Indonesia, our men's team is a couple of shades behind them in match play standards. The going will be tough but we are capable of rising to the occasion to be in contention for a bronze at least." he said.

As for the women's team, he said Singapore looked like the best bet for gold with the other competing teams like Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines all about even.

"So there is every possibility of us picking up a bronze or maybe a silver, if luck swings our way," he said.

Fan's excellent run of sporting success is also matched by his 'Charlie's Angels' comprising wife Ng Bee Yong and daughters Xiao Jun and Xin Gui.

Ng was the state women's table tennis singles champion between 1975 and 1982 while Xin Gui donned Malacca colours in table tennis in the late 90's.

Xiao Jun was a national paddler for over 12 years until calling it quits earlier this year.

Her high points included playing for Malaysia at the Moscow World Championships and the New Delhi Commonwealth Games last year and three editions of the SEA Games beginning in 2005.

With sports now becoming full-time endeavours, Fan's words of wisdom for those aspiring and harbouring hopes of wearing state or national colours hinges on the 3D's — determination, dedication and discipline.

"Like for players in my state water polo training stints and my family members during their playing days, I personally ensured that all their approaches are firmly grounded on the 3D's," he added.
