Sivachandran clinches second win in ADT Tour in Malacca Posted: 16 Jun 2011 06:36 AM PDT MALACCA: A third round move to the leaderboard and a final round score of one-under 71 enabled Malaysia's S. Sivachandran to snatch the Professional Golf Malaysia (PGM) Malacca Classic title at the Ayer Keroh Country Club course here recently. The reigning Asian Development Tour (ADT) Order of Merit winner picked up three birdies but dropped two strokes on the final day to card a four-round total of eight-under 280 to pocket RM31,500. Finishing two strokes adrift on 282 were the trio of Artemio Murakami of the Philippines, Malaysia's Haziq Hamizan and team-mate M. Sasidaran who registered final round scores of 73, 70 and 71 respectively. For Siva, signing out with a six-under 66 in the second round was the spark that lit his fire for the rest of the proceedings. Earlier, he carded a one-over 73 in the opening round but kept in touch with first and second day leader Taiwan's Hsu Chia Jen. The Taiwanese who is the 2010 ADT Order of Merit runner-up, following scores of 68 and 69 after 36 holes, failed to strike it hot and lost the pace. Hsu posted scores of 72 and 74 on the third and final day to finish tied at fourth place with a score of 283 with local challengers Nicholas Fung and Airil Rizman and Japan's Takafumi Kawane. PGM chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid who officiated at the prize giving ceremony reiterated that the ADT was established in 2010 by the Asian Tour as a vehicle to unearth new talents of the game and there were five tournaments in the inaugural season. "With the inclusion of the PGM Malacca Classic, the 2011 ADT schedule will now boast a minimum of seven tournaments which stretches from Bangladesh to Malaysia and then on to Taiwan" he added. Asian Tour executive chairman Kyi Hla Han noted that the inclusion of the PGM Malacca Classic, the next generation of stars from across Asia and the world will have another opportunity to showcase their talents and cut their mark on the ADT. "Last year Sivachandran and Akhmal Tarmizee made full use of their success in the Malaysian tournaments to earn their Asian Tour card. I am sure other Malaysian players will be keen to take full advantage of the opportunity to compete on home soil. It is our intention to provide them with a viable and exciting platform to advance their careers onto the international stage, hence our partnership with the ADT." he said. 200 attend two-day National Geoscience conference Posted: 16 Jun 2011 06:36 AM PDT JOHOR BARU: Geoscientists can understand the close relationship between people and the environment to contribute towards continued sustainability of the community. Minerals and Geoscience Department director general Datuk Yunus Abdul Razak said there are laws regulating the practice that should not harm the environment. Yunus commented on this at the opening of National Geoscience Conference 2011 by Local Government, Housing, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Ahmad Zahri Jamil. Some 200 participants from universities and governmental departments attended the two-day conference, themed "Geoscientists and Ethics for a Sustainable Society". Geological Society of Malaysia president Dr Joy J Pereira said the theme was chosen to create awareness amongst geologists on the importance of ethics and ethical behaviour in their profession. "The conference is also an important platform for geologists to share new findings, facilitate exchange of views and also for the introduction of new ideas and knowledge in this field of study," she said. Iranian participant Noushin Naraghi, 29, a PhD student at Universiti Sains Malaysia said the conference had benefited her in ways of gaining knowledge as well as networking with her peers in the field. "This conference will definitely help me in my research" she said. Another participant, Luluan A. Lubis, 25, from Indonesia said he presented one of his working papers at the conference. "This is also a good opportunity for me to get some input and evaluation on my work which I can improvise," said the Universiti Teknologi Petronas student.
