MALACCA: Some 22 Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh (PHAK) Junior Club children aged between six to ten years participated in a 'Little Chef'cook-off at the Straits Meridien hotel here.

The hotel's executive chef Zaini Abdul Karim and sales manager Corinna Zita had judged the children for their effort.

"We are excited to see how they handle the heat of the competition and perform in the kitchen.

"Even so, we just hope that they would be able to enjoy themselves and experience the fun of cooking with others of the same age", said Corinna.

The event which was chaperoned by the Pantai Junior Club team and hotel chefs required the groups to compete against each other in one cook-off round.

The recipes were suited according to the young cooks' ability, such as chicken sandwich, Russian potato salad, chef salad, fruit rojak, popiah and Thai chicken salad.

Teams formed by the children were given the recipes and cook their selected dish to their best abilities.

They were judged on teamwork, taste, presentation, cleanliness, skills and creativity.

The team who scored the highest points from the judges was named the winner and received buffet lunch vouchers and certificate while others received consolation prizes for their effort.

The hospital's chief executive officer Gan Kong Hoe expressed his delight at the 'Little Chef' event.

"Junior Club activities such as this is organised to foster closer ties between the children as they learn to work together as a team.

"I'm pleased that the hospital is able to continue reaching out to our members and their parents through such educational outings."

The PHAK Junior Club is dedicated to children born at Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh from 2001 onwards.

Medical exams for trainees

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 06:19 PM PDT

MUAR: The government had made it compulsory for trainees selected to join the National Service (NS) to undergo health examinations.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said they were also required to fill up forms on their medical history.

"Those found with certain illness or had physical problems will not be accepted.

"The forms also required them to state on whether they are married or single," she said after opening the Muar Umno division Puteri wing's delegate conference here.

Rosnah was asked to comment on a recent case where a female NS trainee in a camp in Pasir Mas was detained for concealing the birth of her baby which was found dead behind a hostel in the camp.

"I have yet to receive any report of the incident and urge the trainees not to hide any health-related problems including their pregnancy when they declare their state of health by filling the up forms."

It was reported that a female NS trainee in Pasir Mas camp was taken to the hospital after complaining of abdominal pain.

In relation to the matter, Pasir Mas OCPD ACP Haliludin Rahim said the hospital had issued a report and confirmed that the trainee had given birth.

He added that police had found the body of a baby girl behind the female trainees' hostel with its umbilical cord attached.

Earlier at the conference, Rosnah called on all Puteri members and leaders not to have any personal agenda but to focus on strengthening Umno.

She said Puteri members at the grassroots should reject leaders with such agenda and do not allow them to hold posts in the wing.

"Our struggles are to strengthen Umno and Barisan Nasional and we must focus on increasing our memberships.

"We also must ensure our members are voters who can vote for Barisan in the next general election," she added.
