A blast from the past for footballers

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 08:20 PM PDT

MALACCA: Some 50 former state soccer stalwarts and head coaches including legends like Datuk Soh Chin Aun and Robert Choe came together in a reunion at the Malacca Club Rotunda in Tanjong here recently.

Other noteworthy greats include Fong Seng Meng, Wong Kou Fou, Ng Joon Tai, V. Kalimuthu, G. Torairaju, C. Ramachandran, G. Selvamohan, Anthony Koh, M. Selvakumar, Jantan Ali and ex-coaches Halim Darimi, Ibrahim Sotin and Mahmood Hassan were also among the crowd.

Malacca Amateur Football Association (MAFA) president Datuk Yunus Husin and newly elected Malacca Club president Clement Fernandez were guests of honour at the late afternoon gathering.

They also presented appreciation plaques as well as monetary and welfare assistance to several players and coaches for their good services rendered to state football.

Yunos called on former players and coaches to come forward with positive feedback, advice and guidance to the local football scene and MAFA in efforts to bring back the glory days of soccer in Malacca.

"I am sure that your valuable and extensive experience can be drafted meaningfully at our association's grassroot level of the game's development and promotion programmes and projects.

"Your say and advice in the selection and training of local potentials and talents would also go a long way in raising the overall standard of the game in the state," he said.

Halim Darimi who coached Malacca to the 1983 Malaysia Cup competition said he was sad that the sport is in the doldrums despite concerted efforts by MAFA to lift the playing standard.

"In the late 70s and a good part of the 80s, Malacca was a force to be reckoned with on the domestic front with several of its players getting the nod from selectors to don Malaysia colours at regional and Asian level tournaments.

Sadly, our local football fortunes nosedived and have remained in the rut for some 20 years. After being in the limelight of Malaysian football, we were relegated to the Premier League and now, we are in the FAM Cup League.

MAFA, he added, has an ardous task on hand to get back into the elite Super League status in the company of Selangor, Terengganu, Kelantan and the likes.

Former national forward Robert Choe who played at the age of 18 in the 1958 Merdeka Tournament said these days, players are only interested in wanting what the game can give them.

"Many players lack the basic skills, endurance and good reading ability of the game.

"They are in the game for their professional salaries and other incentives and perks.

"This mindset must change, if one's playing level and subsequently the overall game standards within the various state teams are to see much improvement," said the 70-year-old.

Young dancers making waves in the country and overseas

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 08:15 PM PDT

JOHOR BARU: A group of pint-sized traditional Zapin dancers are doing the state proud as they have formed a travelling troupe performing locally and overseas.

Their dance teacher Z'nudin Arbun attributed the child performers' success to their dedication and little bit of luck after they made it big since forming the troupe in 1999.

"It has not been an easy journey as the children are easily distracted, but I believe teaching our young ones is the best way that we can retain the beautiful movements of the traditional moves.

"Other than Zapin, I also teach my students other traditional dances such as Joget, Inang, Kuda Kepang and many others," he said after conducting the dancer's weekly practice session at SK Seri Melati here.

Z'nudin added that initially – sceptics had doubted the quality of the group as they were only children but he continued to push on to ensure that they mastered all the moves.

"I am always challenged to come up with new and creative ways to retain the interest of the troupe consisting 30 children.

"Although it is tiring, it's definitely worth the effort," he said.

Z'nudin who is a former Yayasan Warisan Johor dancer said he spends two hours a week with the children and usually comes up with the choreography, costumes and ideas on his own.

"Now my children teach each other the dance steps and even encourage other children their age to join in and learn," he said adding that this proved that age was not a boundary.

He said the Zapin troupe had performed in Australia, Brunei, England, India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Vietnam.

"Dance has thought these children to be responsible, dedicated, motivated and creative," he said.

Z'nudin added that more art programs should be conducted by the government to nurture young talent and also keep them away from negative activities.
