Aretha notches a first for Malaysia in golf event Posted: 02 Jun 2011 04:50 PM PDT MALACCA: Sabahan Aretha Pang Herng notched a golfing first for Malaysia by capturing the ladies mantle at the Malaysian Open Amateur Golf Championships played at the Alor Gajah A'Famosa Golf Resort here recently. However, the championships 109th edition failed to yield a local male winner. The last time a Malaysian triumphed was way back in 1997 through the efforts of R.Natchimuthu. Australian Daniel Bringolf hailing from Sydney took full advantage of a final day collapse by overnight leader Taiwan's Chieh Po Lee to snatch honours. For 17 year old Aretha, she recorded a wire to wire victory in the women's division, closing with a one over par 73 to complete a three day total reading six under par 210. She carded scores of 68 and 69 in the first and second rounds respectively. For Aretha holding on to slim leads over the first two days spelt a gritty teenager. Two bogeys over the first four holes on the final play's day almost blew her title challenge. However, she recovered to post two birdies against another bogey on the back nine to pluckily stay ahead of the chasing pack. The Philippines claimed the runner-up and third rung spots, with Dottie Ardina closing with a 69 for a three day total score of 212, followed by Jayvie Agojo on a 213 score count. For the 16 year old Chieh, a splendid run on the first three days came to woeful end on the final round of play. After posting 65,67 and 71, a double bogey at the par four seventh hole on the final round signalled disaster for the Taiwanese title aspirations. He faded out with four over 77 to wind up with a 280 four day total and the runner up tag. Aussie Daniel seized the opportunity to overcome a two-stroke overnight defecit behind leader Chieh to card a one under par 71 to claim the title by four strokes with a 12 under 276 total over four days. India's Abhijit Singh finished third on seven under par 281. Malaysia's best finishers was Abel Tam on 293 (73-73-74-73), followed by Kenneth De Silva on 294 (73-72-77-72) and Mohd Azman Basharuddin (77-72-73-72). IN one of the closest contests seen at the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) annual general meeting held in conjunction with the national open amateur championships, Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor won the presidency by a solitary vote over incumbent Datuk Robin Loh. Anwar secured 150 votes while Loh managed 149. There were two spoilt votes while a total of 310 votes were cast overall. The other exco positions were also closely contested with the two vice president posts going to incumbents Datuk Mohd Yaacob Mohd Kassim with 151 votes and Low Teck San posting 146 votes. Incumbent Datuk Zulkifli Ismail kept his honorary secretary post with 180 votes against 121 votes by challenger, Nor Afendi Mohd Razlan. For the treasurer's post, incumbent Andrew Bryan Perera polled 180 votes against Chow Chee Keong who garnered 124 votes. There were two spoilt votes in this contest. The new MGA president pledged to work closely with golfing bodies such as the Malaysian Ladies Golf Association, the Professional Golf of Malaysia Tour and state affiliates. "At this AGM, there were quite a few issues brought up by the affiliates. We shall be look at them in our strategy roadmap to take MGA to the next level, particularly in the area of junior golf development" said Anwar.
