Market traders in Bandar Sri Damansara want an answer from MBPJ

Traders at the Bandar Sri Damansara (BSD) market in Petaling Jaya are in limbo after the market's new owner slapped them with a notice to move out by July 31.

The 77 traders want an answer from the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), which located them to the market in Jalan Tembaga SD5/2A about 20 years ago.

The market houses a food court serving about 60,000 residents from the housing estate as well as workers from more than 400 factories in the industrial zone.

The property was owned and managed by Land and General Berhad before it was sold to Isunagasari Sdn Bhd in November 2009.

"We were asked to move out by July 31 because the new owner wanted to develop the place, no compensation was offered at all," said BSD Petty Traders' Association secretary Jackie Tan at a press conference at the BSD Club yesterday.

He said after the change of hands, the rental was increased from RM250 to RM400 progressively.

Tan also said that there were plans to increase the rental to RM800 recently but it was rejected by traders.

"It is the only market in the area and was included in the masterplan. It was MBPJ who moved us here 20 years ago.

"The council should tell us where we should go from here," he added.

Tan said traders at the Sungai Buloh, Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Taman Megah markets, who were also relocated by MBPJ, were paying only between RM50 and RM140 monthly for rental and licensing fee, while they had to pay RM400.

BSD Residents' Association president Ravindran Raman Kutty said residents wanted the market to remain.

He said the two associations held meetings with Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong's representatives and MBPJ on the matter but had not received any news after three weeks.

"As it is, we are facing illegal hawkers issue in our township. Imagine the social and economic problems that will arise after the market is shut down.

"The authorities must view this seriously as their decision is going to have a far- reaching impact on the people and the factories operating in our township," said Ravindran.

When contacted, representative from Isunagasari said the company would look into the matter and would issue a statement later.
