Selangor juniors Eugene, Mhaithelly win Under-13 titles at CIMB bash

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 04:56 AM PDT

SELANGOR juniors Eugene Heng and S. Mhaithelly put up a determined display to win the boys and girls Under-13 titles in the third leg of the CIMB Junior squash circuit at the PJ Astaka recently.

Eugene, a member of the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) junior development programme, easily defeated Kedah's P. Mivesh Kumar 11-5, 6-11,11-3,11-6 in the boys' final.

In contrast, Mhaithelly did not have it easy and had to battle long hours before over-powering Jean Wong 8-11, 17-15,12-10,11-4 to clinch the girls' title.

The Squash Rackets Association of Selangor (SRAS) secretary Mary Ong, who is also the co-ordinator of the MBPJ junior squash development programme, said they were pleased with their trainees' results in the circuit.

"Besides Eugene and Mhaithelly, we also had five players on podium and it is certainly inspiring. We hope to see them progress in the next leg which will be the grand finals,'' said Mary.

The five players were K. Saachin Kumar, Justin Ho, N. Shasmita, A. Vanmathi and Michelle Preeti.

Saachin made it to the final in the boys' Under-9 but lost to Sarawak's Prasad Ruhern in the final. Prasad won 11-9, 9-11, 13-11,11-9. Justin finished fourth after losing to Sarawak's Tommy Lau in the play-off.

Shasmita, Vanmathi and Michelle were fourth in their respective age groups.

Squash Rackets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) vice president Steven Kwan said the circuit would culminate with the grand finals.

"Points have been awarded to the players, according to their positions in each leg, and top 32 in each age group will qualify for the grand finals,'' said Steven.

The CIMB Foundation will sponsor the winners and runners-up in each age group for the Hong Kong Junior Open championships.
