Posted: 13 Jun 2011 02:35 AM PDT MIRI-born, Kuala Lumpur-raised singer-songwriter Zee Avi, now based in New York, has revealed the details of her second album, 'Ghostbird', which is due for international release on Aug 23. The new album is much anticipated by local fans who now regard Zee as one of the pioneers in the music scene here by taking her career abroad. In early 2008, Zee left to pursue her music in Los Angeles before heading out to New York as a permanent career and creative base. 'Ghostbird', which features 11 songs, will be Zee's second outing on American folk singer-songwriter Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records. The upcoming album began to take shape in her Brooklyn kitchen in the middle of last year while Zee followed up with new material while holidaying in the Florida Everglades for two months where she found endless musings. "I had such a good time basking in the sun, fishing, shrimping and just being in the water in Florida," Zee was quoted as saying during her short visit home to KL and Kuching in mid March. The new album, she explained, is a celebration of nature. "It has a new kind of spirit, it's positive and it gives an eagle eye view of a beautiful expanse. I hope to channel that beauty through my music." The 26-year-old also revealed a keen fascination for owls (she loves anything with a burung hantu motif). That led to the album being titled 'Ghostbird', with the new material recorded in a two week spell at the Solar Powered Plastic Plant studios in LA with producer Mario Caldato Jr (of Beastie Boys, Yoko Ono fame) earlier this year. One of the album's highlights is 'Siboh Kitak Nangis', the first song in Zee's Sarawakian Malay dialect. "I'm definitely Sarawakian first, woman second and ... yeah, human third," she added with pride. The pop savvy 'The Book of Morris Johnson' written by Morris Johnson, a Floridian folk artist, is the first time Zee has recorded something on an album from an outside lyrical source, while 'Swell Window', 'Stay In The Clouds', '31 Days', 'Concrete Wall' and 'Anchor' are the other highlights. Zee's new album 'Ghostbird' follows her self-titled debut, which was released two years ago. It achieved gold status here with 10,000 units sold, spawning the hits 'Bitterheart' and 'Kantoi.' Due to her busy tour schedules and festival appearances in the US, Zee has played only one sold-out show in KL last March but there are plans to return at the end of the year to promote her new album.
