Posted: 22 May 2011 07:38 PM PDT

KUALA TERENGGANU: Poverty did not deter Sabariah Ismail from success.

The 46-year-old businesswoman is known for her deep-fried seafood and runs a stall in Seberang Takir.

She said her dreams of running her a food business was realised when her husband Mohd Noor Taib, a fisherman had saved up enough to open her a kedai tepung celup (seafood fried in batter) stall by the sea.

"I specialise in serving seafood such as squid, prawns and an assortment of fishes deep-fried in batter," she said.

Sabariah added that her selling point is providing customers with tea-time treats from 2pm - 7pm at her stall in Teluk Ketapang beach.

She manages her business with a little help from husband and sister-in-law Haslina Taib.

The tepung celup business is a result of hardwork and preseverance.

Sabariah said she has been in the food business for nearly 25 years and sold nasi dagang, local snacks and other food items by the roadside to collect enough money to open her own stall.

"I managed to pool enough money along with my husband's income to open the shop.

"I love to cook, but preparing seafood has always been my passion," she said.

On location of the stall by the sea, Sabariah said it gave her customers a lovely scenery while they enjoy their food.

"No matter how hard can be, I will never ever give up.

"Thankfully, I can now enjoy the fruits of my labour," she said.

Relating her bitter-sweet success, Sabariah conceded that there were times when she actually doubted her dreams.

"There were times I wanted to give up, but my husband has always been my pillar of strength.

"We do not live lavishly now but we make enough to enjoy a comfortable living," she said.

Adventure racers cover rugged terrain of Tioman island

Posted: 22 May 2011 07:36 PM PDT

THE Sultan Ahmad Shah Tioman International Eco-Challenge (Sastiec) held annually in Pulau Tioman off Pahang is a gruelling event.

Adventure racers had to endure a 30km-course and all 210 of them had proven their mettle by finishing.

Many first-timers found the event as a platform to test their abilities in preparation for future races.

Organising chairman Datuk Seri Tengku Kamarulzaman Sultan Abu Bakar said Sastiec is gaining popularity as the number of young participants had increased compared to previous years.

"However, we have to limit it between 200 to 250 due to certain reasons,'' he said.

The race, he added, starts and ends at the Berjaya Tioman Resort, covering some rugged terrain of the island such as hills and rock outcrops, river crossings and at the same time, participants would also get a glimpse of the island's natural beauty.

"The race is also called the 'Royal Race' because at one of the stages, participants has to race through Kampung Nipah located at the south part of of the island.

"This is the place where my late father Sultan Abu Bakar used to stay during his visits to the island in the 60s,'' he said.

Tengku Kamarulzaman added that the adventure race also contributed to an increase in the number of tourist arrivals to Pulau Tioman, which was dubbed as one of the 10 most beautiful islands in the world.

On the event's theme, 'Nature, Culture and Adventure', Tengku Kamarulzaman said it befitted the whole setting as the entire length and with of the island was covered.

Event director Datuk Thong Kok Sing said the race was a real test on the participants' mental and physical fitness as they had to track the route which included getting across a 474-metre hill before passing the first quarter mark of the race.

"Last year's first part of the race was much easier but this year, the first hurdle is to go uphill before proceeding to the stretch which had a gentler track,'' he added.

He added that there was a good response from foreigners with participants coming from Kenya, Australia, Singapore, Russia, Thailand, Vietnam and Brunei.

The Sastiec is now a permanent feature in Pahang's annual eco-tourism calendar and had gained a good reputation among domestic and international participants.

Kenyans Moses Kipsang Kandie, 24, and Eunice Nyawira Muchiri, 19, won the men's and women's international categories.

In the local's men category, navy personnel Heidilee Mohamad, 28, from Sabah was crowned champion while Cheah Meei Meci , 24, won the women's category.

Also present were Tourism Malaysia acting director general Datuk Azizan Noordin and Tioman Development Authority general manager Datuk Hashim Mat Tahir.
